What is the purpose of the resonator? Do I need it, or can I cut it off without any major problems happening. I am sick of it hitting on everything, so I was thinking about re-routing the exhaust out the side. (97 D1)

I am not a mech' guru so take this with a grain of salt. I had a new muffler put on my disco and I did not have a resonator put on. I was told it was a sound deadning device... I notice that my disco is a lil more thoaty but nothing too loud. its been about a year with out it.

the resonator just "tunes" the sound...i say cut it, re-route it, and take pictures so we can see how it looks!

mine will be off in about two weeks after i finish installing one of the uber-davis rear bumpers...

Yeah...I'm not going *That* extreme with it.
No Davis-style hole in the quarter panel!

Actually, one of the rigs here at work has the exhaust coming out of the side of the rear bumper, so the bumper ends up being the tailpipe. That would be a neat idea...until you accidentally touched it with bare skin, of course...

yeah...;) i doubt i will go that far either (and even greg says it is a lot of work and adjustment), but my resonator will come off and the tailpipe will do "something."

The resonator is to tune/quiet the exhaust. I replaced the stock muffler with a Magnaflow and removed the resonator and extended it with a chrome down pointing tip. And it sounds great and seemed to have better low end performance.

Since I own my own shop, it didn't cost me much, but we would normally charge about 160 for the same job.

So take it off!!

I just re did my exhaust system last month...went from the Cats back and just kept the lager of the 2 muffler things. the new one is nice and tucked up ( even more so than stock it appears) and then it just has a straight pipe that goes all the way back. one benefit to no rear resonator, is that you can tuck the tail pipe really nice and high, and its almost invisible
