If you mean that the motor is cranking, but not firing, do you hear the fuel pump running? When was the last fuel filter change?

I would check the fuel pump first....turn the key to the on position (leave the radio off) and listen in the cargo area flooring for an almost purring sound. That would be the fuel pump. If no sound I would say either no voltage getting to pump or bad pump. Pull up the carpet and check.

Cranking is turning over, but I assume you mean it turns over but will not fire.

Every time I've had crank-but-no-start problems with my D1 it has been somewhere in the ignition. I'd verify you are getting spark.

A few times the coil to distributer cable popped off and another time it was a bad ignition module and/or coil. Both where replaced at the dealer for the outrageous price of $750, and it was the *last* time I ever paid the dealer for work.

correct. It is cranking but not firing. I will try and listen for the fuel pump and get back with you all.

P.S. I do not believe that I have had a fuel filter changed since i have had my car unless they do that on an oil change.

OK... I turned on my car to on position. Did not hear any sound after turning my air off. I also trie to start it and i actually was able to fire it once while pressing down on the gas pedal and then it turned right back off. It misght also be worthy to note i was backing up 2 1/2 weeks ago and ran over some stuff that dented the back tire well right under the gas by the mud flaps pretty good. But car stopped working this past Saturday. Where do i pull up the carpet to check the fuel pump?

Here is a good picture of what you are looking for. No you do not have to take every thing out like this, just an example of where you need to be to find fuel pump.

Joey,

Is that where you access the fuel pump from? How difficult is the process to change it?

The dealer said it would cost somewhere in the range of $700 to change.

Jacob.

I've had problems in the past with my 96 Disco not starting after unlocking the rig. Sometimes it doesn't reactivate the ignition system, and then it simply turns over but doesn't start. When that happens, I simply lock and unlock the alarm with the key fob and it'll start after that. Give it a try before you start replacing stuff.

I've got a ghost in my alarm, too. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. But it sounds like, in this case, the fuel pump may have taken a hard knock.

KC, sorry I didn't responed to you post earlier. I have not had to change the Fuel pump on mine yet, I just read every post as the come up on the site and copy notes into a word doc for future reference. From what I understand it is not too hard to change the Fuel Pump, and from what I hear you can buy one at Autozone for much less than a LR version. Not sure on a '97 or newer disco, but at least that is what I hear on the '96 and older.

But either way, $700 is robbing you blind. I would think fuel pump, gasket and labor shouldn't be more then $250 to $300. Of course my local mechanic only charges $20 a hour and I usually help, which saves me time and money.
