HELP,

my 88RRC drop idle revs to about 200 when switched on. Despite the fact it doesn't blow cold (which I will have to get looked at).

I have new rotor, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, flame trap, vacuum line and battery which all brought the engine up to strength and helped the erratic idle.

Someone suggested that it might be the alternator. Has anyone seen this.

Also how easy is a R12 to R134 conversion? anyone tried any of the kits available and any recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Freddy

I would imagine the conversion from 12 to 134 is very straight forward, however be cautious of the freon you put into your vehicle. I work for a place that does ac recharges and if the vehicle has "bunk" freon we are not allowed to charge the vehicle because it can contaminate our good freon. I hope it goes well for you.

Not sure what the engine's problem is, but the ECU should increase the idle rpm slightly when the AC compressor is on.

the stepper motor should take car of this, try cleaning it.

http://www.discoweb.org/faq/stepper.htm

if standing in front of the engine it is on the rear passenger side of the engine. like the second picture shown above.

Sorry,

forgot to mention that it has a new stepper motor and it still eats the revs. Thanks for the thought though..

According to my shop manual, there is a yellow-blue wire that goes from the AC system to the ECU, probably to pin 21. This tells the ECU the state of the AC system. I'd try checking for a voltage change on this wire. If its not connected, the ECU won't know the AC is on. Unfortunately, in the great tradition of Rover electrical manuals, the ECU troubleshooting section doesn't mention the AC at all. From the wiring diagrams, though, it looks like this wire should be high with the AC on, low with it off.

How has the BASE idle been adjusted? With engine at operating temp and all accessories off, crimp the vacuum hose between the stepper motor and the throttle body with a pair of long nose pliers or similar tool. If the revs drop right off or the engine stalls, then the base idle is incorrect. Before adjusting, make sure throttle body and plate are clean and plate has a .05mm air gap. After adjusting this, check TPS has 300mV output at idle, Very important as ECU has to be told to be in idle program, and then recrimp vacuum line WHILE adjusting idle speed to around 800rpm.Remove tamper proof plug at throttle body to do this. Release crimped hose and the revs SHOULD go up then drop in slight steps ( hence 'Stepper' motor.) back to 800. Note that all this applies to our non-catalyst Australian vehicles with Lucas 14CUX ECU. As far as I can determine there is however no difference in this side of engine management to yours.
