A long extension was the greatest help when I changed mine. That way you can lay with your head resting behind the front bumper and should be able to see the bolts to be removed. worked for me.
Took about an hour to pull one and replace with rebuilt starter.

Hope this helps and good luck.

remove the heat shields, I cut mine off with a dremel tool.. Then reach in from above to remove the bolt on the top of the starter it's a 5/16th allen bolt. The lie on your bacvk and reach up and in to get the bottom bolt off. you have to undo the + battery cable to the solenoid, the ground cable and the little slip on wire. Not a bad job once you get the shields out of the way. I didn't need extensions. You don't have to remove exhaust or drive shaft etc

you don't have to cut the heat shield.
just unbolt it.

just getting a starter in and out is difficult because it's such a tight space and usually the two 8mm allen bolts are really stuck on there. I didn't remove the exhaust section below it, but if I had to do it again, I would.

also, don't mess around with some silly allen key. Definitely get a ratchet adapter from 3/8" (or whater) to 8mm Hex. I usually go with FACOM, but didn't want to wait for it to get here, so I bought the piece from a SNAP-ON truck and it worked admirably with my FACOM breaker bar and the liberal use of liquid wrench.

and don't forget to disconnect your battery(ies)!!!
