I just went to web page that has a dual battery tray for D2.

It looks like a really good idea, but my rover is not here so that I can look under the hood to see if it fits. I just looked in the workshop manual, but I can't tell if there is anything in the way that would prevent using this.

Does anyone know if it will just fit in engine area "as is" 2 yellow tops -- or would something in that area need to be relocated in order for it to fit? (I have 2002 D2 if that makes any difference)

http://www.aedofab.com/prod_rover/dualbatterytray.htm

Thanks, Jamie

Thats all?? You are talking about the jack that is used to change tires aren't you? If I just take that out it can fit??

That will be awesome!! When I asked techs to figure it out, I told them that I did not think they needed to be side by side (I don't know where I heard that though).

BTW, why is it called a "bottle" jack??

Thanks Mike! :-)

I just remembered that I can see what it looks like under my hood, I found pics of it!

I looked at instructions on install of tray, but I could not tell for sure if it would fit in mine like it shows on aedofab site.

Please excuse mess, that was before steam cleaning. Thanks again, Jamie

Jamie,
Don,t know about a D2 but on a D1 the dual battery tray sits on the other side, Drivers side to you.
after removing the bottle jack doing a mod to the air cleaner funnel.

Go with Odyssey batteries, much better than optima yellow tops and smaller too!

on the DII, the battery is located on the pass side (left hand drive north american models)...

if you look at your picture above, the large squareishbox with the "ribs" covers your battery (as i am sure you know...) and your bottle jack (called a bottle jack because it's body looks like an old glass milk bottle!). that cover will be removed and (and i have not seen one in person, so i think this is true based on the photos on aedofab) the entire plastic case that includes your battery and jack mount will be unbolted and removed. in its place will go your new battery tray.

so you will have to:

1) find a new place for your jack (like maybe back with your newly mounted power tank in some kind of mount), and;
2) buy the hardware to connect the two batteries.

there are dual battery setups for sale at RV accessory stores or marine supply stores that you might check out. some people install seperation devices so that the batteries are connected while driving (and therefore getting a charge from your altenator), but they flip a glorified switch to seperate them off road. the reason for that is so that you might drain one battery while winching or using off road lights, but the second still carries a charge so you can start the truck if it dies or you turn it off...

maybe you can have one overnighted to the dealership, huh!?!?!

;)

good luck, jamie

Thanks Mike,

I'm thinking about that very thing and will talk to them in the AM. Hopefully, they will also sell the necessary hardware. Also sending info off to techs. I already accidently broke the top of the plastic battery case... so, no big loss there.

Thanks again! :-)

Mike,

Now I am just REALLY HOPING that dealership has not found place for second battery yet -- MOST ESPECIALLY b/c I told them that I did not think it needed to be near the first battery.

The frig is no probelm, less than 10V. The problem is me, I get forgetful sometimes. Since I have asked for some things to be hardwired, I must plan for my own inadequacies!! :-) :-)

Actually, damage has not been too bad. When I started thinking about doing this, I almost keeled over when I began to estimate costs. NO WAY I could have afforded that ever!!

With much effort I have only had to pay full retail for a few odds and ends - and that has been mostly when I know there is something I should have onboard to compensate for my weaknesses.

Also, I started acquiring what I knew I would be installing as "too good to pass up" prices came along. I had quite a pile in my garage before stock stuff started coming off truck. I have a few local "Mom and Pop" companies in town that were willing to get some of the things I needed in at an "in and at the door" price. Another VERY BIG help was the prices that Rachel and Bill were able to sell what they recommended to me.

The biggest ouchy of all has been the time and energy used to learn about the confusing parts and then to get the best prices possible. I always keep in mind what my Grandpa said -- if you count your pennies, your dollars fall into place!! :-)

(even so, on occassion, I have been penny wise and dollar dumb :-( )

I have often wondered how easy this might be if one did have bottomless pits of money??

Oh well, it is still true that nothing worth while is ever easy. I am just hoping my sanity is still intact when I get to the "worthwile" section of this!! :-) :-)
