I was driving on the beach yesterday, and I was going through some thick sand and I got stuck! It almost felt as if my four wheel drive was not working. It felt real sluggish, seemed like my truck was doing a lot of work to get from A to B. I had the CDL engaged (don't know it that is neccessary or not for the sand). Finally after I was embarrassingly pulled out (not to worry..not by a Jeep), I made sure that I had the CDL engaged correctly (pretty sure I did, light was on). Finished my fun on the packed sand close to the beach, then made my trek out...same problem once I hit the thick sand, didn't get stuck but almost didn't make it out!

I didn't know if anyone had any tips for driving on sand, or had a similar problem...I may just be retarded and not know how to drive on the beach.

Did you air down your tires? If not, this would account for some of your difficulties. Also, what tires are you on? If your on M/T's they perform OK but an A/T tire is much better. Driving style is very important...slowly build up steady momentum, really try NOT to spin your tires. This also works for the snow.

Around 15 psi is good for sand -just be careful of sharp turns or higher speeds or you can lose a bead at that pressure. 20 psi also works pretty well with a bit less risk of losing the bead. Depends on tire size too - ie: taller tire when deflated gives you more contact patch.

that explains a lot, I was running on 30 psi. I have the michelin tires that come stock with the vehicle.

would that account for the sluggish feeling the truck had. It really felt like it was struggling.

Stephen,
You need some major instruction on Beach Driving,
my 93D1 performs outstandingly on the Beach.
Joining a 4x4 maybe a way for you to go if you intend to do lots of Beach Driving, there many basic rules to follow.
Let your tyres down Lock your Diff and always revers up if you feal that your going down (getting bogged) and then continue is a good start.

I had the same problem and almost got stuck once, my 98 was laboring extremely hard in the sand. I had the tire pressure down to about 25 and I have stock tires. My brother and his wife were with us at the beach in their Xterra and it did much better, quite embarrassing and he is still not letting me live it down. On the way home my front bearings went in the front differential, I'm wondering if that was causing any of the problems?

I have been driving on beaches down here for the past 7 yrs and never had any major problems in my Dico or the Cruiser, we must remember that the Dico is the lighter.
When I'm driving on the beach in (Lose Bogy Sand) I always follow a (Rule of Thumb) its not the (Nuts) on the wheels the determine the success of any 4x4 on the Beach but the Nuts behind the Wheels.
