OK. SO the factory recommends premimum on the 1999 Disco ... and I have been faithful, But, can one safely drop to mid-grade (at least) during the cool weather? Anyone tried it? Anyone know of a dreadful outcome? Thanks! Andy |

used premium like religion first year. Haven't used it since. this has been debated many times. people are right down the middle on this one. bottom line is your truck won't blow up. |

Does the '99 have a knock sensor? If so, the end result at worst would be more retarded timing, hence less power. My '94 3.9 V8i runs fine at 7,000 feet on regular... No knock sensor, simple engine. |

All, thanks for the assist! Honestly, this is wat I thought. It's off warranty as of the next 150 miles and 3 days (4 years) and I have owned it only for the last 1500 miles - so, what the heck! I've been maintaining old Peugeots and BMWs for the last 15 years ... so I'll apply the sense my momma gave me and try mid grade for a while! Thanks again folks!!! Cheers! |

The manual states that premium fuel is required, not recommended. If this vehicle requires premium, then there is a reason why. Let's not also forget that if a vehicle requires premium, then it's likely tuned to run optimally on premium. Seriously though, how much money will you save by running a lower octane fuel? If an engine is tuned for premium, and you run it on a lower octane fuel, it may not blow up, but it will keep it from operating as efficiently as possible. If it does have to retard the timing to prevent detonation, then the money you saved by filling with a lower octane fuel may be wasted by decreased fuel economy, especially if it's not producing as much power forcing you to use the gas pedal more aggressively. |

I think they are perhaps higher compression hence the required octane. but I dont know? I mean how much more will it cost to burn the good shit. Use the good shit, its better for your truck. It is likely that using the lesser octance will have detrimental effects on milage. Bottom line use the good stuff. if cant afford it why get a LR? |

Lower grade fuel will result in the ECU setting more retarded timing. More timing retard will result in greater engine heating and lower efficiency. You may or may not perceive the difference but it's there. If you are a driver who does not notice by all means run the cheaper fuel if you want. Land Rover reps have also told me that lower quality fuel/timing retard contributes to buildup of carbon on the exhaust valve stems. This may be a problem for you in the future - I really don't know. Personally, I use hi-test. |

If you check the archives you will find that this has been talked about alot.. In my Disco I, If I run anything less then 92 octane, I put in some Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant. |

I have used regular mainly for $ reasons. The truck runs fine, but not as well as with 92, which I do use when camping or towing - you can tell the difference in less engine knock and a little smoother - which seems to translate into more power - but it is probably just perception. |

Why do they even sell mid-grade gas?? Does any car require mid-grade? The Octane rating only goes up 2 points for mid-grade. Do they actually have a third underground tank for mid-grade, or is it blended at the pump?? Randall |

If I dont run premium mine knocks and starts to shudder a bit while cruising...95 disco. For some folks regular works, for mine it doesn't. |

If I use low grade my truck starts to rust...more If I use mid grade the electrics stop working If I use premium the electrics stop working, the truck starts to rust and I run out of money |

What is the octane of US fuel. I see people commenting on using fuel lower than 92. 92 is standard in OZ and most of the High octane stuff is 98 now |

Mid grade is just a mixture of regular and premium, according to Hess. |
