RRC 3.5L running hot. 1. No viscous coupling - solid coupling 2. No coolant leaks 3. Radiator rodded 4. Thermostat punched out 5. VDO temp gauge goes to 212� within 20 minutes of driving, but not if only idling. There are only so many components in a cooling system. I've established its ACTUALLY running hot, so its down to one of the below. Can anybody add to this list? Please do.. 1. poor coolant circulation a. low coolant level / leaks - NO b. bad thermostat - NO c. blockage inside radiator - NO d. bad water pump - ? 2. poor air circulation a. belt slippage - NO b. cowling off - NO c. spots / other obstruction - NO d. radiator clogged (mud/grass/insects) - NO e. viscous coupling failure - N/A 3. poor heat transfer a. oxide layer in engin - ? b. oxide layer in radiator - ? 4. excessive heat generation a. worn cam - ? b. poor timing - ? c. poor lubrication (oil pump, etc) - ? d. carb problem - ? |

Just to be sure, put the VDO gauge sensor in a pot of boiling water. Not likely, but stranger things have happened. How bad was your radiator when you had it rodded? I'm not an expert, but is it possible there's a blockage inside the engine itself? |

Ian, I didnt see radiator condition myself. Its certainly possible to have restricted flow through the block. VDO gauge I do believe - still have orig gauge in operation as well (new sender) and the two match. Took it in to a repair shop today after I learnt the guy there is good at this sort of thing... lets hope.
