I have a 95 disco, 115k on it, I had the radiator rodded about 8 months ago (it was 40% pluged), new thermostat 1 year ago, new expansion tank 6 months ago (if you haven't gotten one yet, get one, nothing like being stuck with yours spewing). And new hoses. Problem just started after runnin fine for about 6 months, now when its hot and I hit a hill the disco starts heating up if I have the AC on. If I dont have it on, on steep windey grades it will do the same thing. My guess is waterpump, cause I cant figure out that it would be anything else, either that or the coolant mixture is not quit right, but I checked and it floats 4 outa 5 bubbles in the tester. suggestions? |

Remove your thermostat and see what happens. I've always tried that as a procedure of elimination in the past, and it's saved me many times! Also, if your rad was 40% blocked, was all the gunk removed? Maybe try a coolant flush and see what comes out also. One last thing- is your guage reading right? I'm not a LR mech, but that's my $0.02! Good luck! Paul. |

It could be a failing fan clutch...is yours still the original one? |

as stupid and simple as it sounds - have you ever washed radiator itself? We had same issues with XTerras in club recently and it turned out to be LOTS of dirt and dead bugs between fins. Simple green&low pressure water from gardenhose takes care of it |

Paul Yep, it was flushed when I had it rodded. I can remove the thermostat, but when I have tried that in the past, it doesnt seem to help much. And the gauge is correct, cause when it gets hot, I can smell the coolant. Dave Its the original fan clutch, I'll have to look into that one, that sounds like a promising culprit. Sergei I actually washed it all out about 6 months ago, when I took out the radiator to have it rodded, but Ill look again. What about the water pump? Anyone had problems with those? Or am i barkin up the wrong tree. Oh, one more thing, when im going on the higway wtih the AC on, its fine, if I slow down to go through a town, it startes to heat up...

Hmm.. if its ok at highway speed, yet heating up at slow pace - it can be fan issues - not enough air squeezed through to cool fins down, so what Dave said Or something as funky as fan being dropped off bearings.. Check if it actually turns ok.. (before getting into pricy stuff like water pumps/thermostat replacing) |

scott, just for your own interest you might want to get one of those lazer tempature guages. they have them at sears for like $40 and i am sure you cna get them elsewhere for cheaper. point it in there and see what your readings are. my range rover was not as severly hot as what my guage read. also the VC fan clutch might not be locking up so your fan isn't doing it's job. i know on the disco when mine would lock on i'd hear it and feel the HP loss. rd

How do I tell if the viscous coupling or the Fan Clutch is bad? |

Scott I had the same symptoms. I changed the thermostat, had the radiator rodded, flushed the engine block. It turned out to be my fan clutch. I could not tell you how to tell if it is bad. Some say that it will lock-up or spin free all the time, as far as I could tell mine did not do either. I got a used one from a junk yard here in NC and it seems a lot louder now, but no overheating.
