Just as soon as I get another Disco, another issue. Hopefully it's just a minor one. When I turn at low speeds (25 mph to stopped) there is a clunking sound coming from the front end. I noticed this last night, and had my wife sit in the Disco and turn the steering wheel while I investigated. I can feel the "clunking" on the steering components, but cannot pinpoint where exactly it is coming from. The details on my Disco. 97 Disco XD, 35,000 never seen even a gravel road. No modifications whatsoever. Any ideas? I don't want something to be so bad that my steering fails and I die. Brendan 97 XD |

Yes, if going fast you could perish. I had a mild clunk, and found a bad ball joint/tie rod end, the one that goes from the pitman arm to the steering knuckle, also you will find two more on the track rod, knuckle to knuckle, a 3' pry bar will help you find what is loose! losing steering falls under the Not good catagorie Good luck finding the noise, and like what was mentioned, check the parhard bushings Peter. |

If its not in the steering linkage, I'm gonna guess its the CV joints. Clunking sounds during slow speed turns is a classic bad CV joint symptom |

I had a CV joint go bad on my 95. It clunked when the wheel rotated. My clunking on my XD is only when the steering wheel is turned at low speeds or stopped (wheels not rolling). The clunk was prevelent between 11:00 and 1:00 o'clock, closer to noon. Here is the goofy thing. It's not doing it now. I have noticed that I have a slight shimmy in the steering when I am on rough roads and hit small potholes. The tires are the factory Michelins that came on the XD and they are in great shape. Key points about this rig is that it has never been off road and only has (now) 35K. That is what is spooking me. I was curious if as to any inherent problems with steering on the 97's. Alan, I know, so true. That's why I went ahead about this rig. I told my wife " I may die tomorrow so being broke today is okay"! Brendan 97 XD |
