I've noticed in the last few months that I sometimes get a groaning type of sound when I turn the wheel after just cranking the rover, and before moving. As in, when I get in in the mornings, crank the rover, and turn the wheel to start to back out of my parking spot.

The sound doesn't sound like a power steering pump sound as much as it sounds like some ungreased metal groaning as it is forced to turn/move. Anybody ever experience this, and is there something greasable that I am missing in my service, or could it be the pump?

 Thanks,
 Greg

Steering groans on disco's are quite common and usually not much to worry about.
I've read hundreds of times about people taking Disco's to dealer to check this out and spending a small fortune to find the fault...end rusult was a can of grease.
Tyr pushing some grease in the rubber grommit housing the column from the engine bay - that might help.
 Anyone else????

Fluid in the reservoir is at the Max Fill mark. I will take a look at the places to apply some grease from a friction standpoint, like the engine bulkhead grommit that you mention. I studied the steering column inside the engine compartment the other day and couldn't find anything that would be making the noise............. at least nothing that could be serviced.

 Thanks so far.

 Any other ideas?

Greg, I get the same sound from my D2 with 43K and have been hearing it since about 15-20K I think. I brought it to the dealer and they replaced the pump, didn't do anything. I just spray wd-40 or put grease from my grease gun on my hand and put it all over the rod ends and on the pittman arm(not sure if its called that) and on the sway bar ends.(Dealer said it could be the sway bars)It stops for a little while until the grease washes off and you need to "surface grease" everything again. Oh one more thing it might also be that metal stopper thing on the axle that stops the wheel from turning, its a stud like thing that meets a curved metal suface on the axle. Put some grease on that too! Hope this helps.

 Greg,
Just had the same noises coming from mine. Grease the panhard rod bushings and noise went away. Don't know if it will work for you but its worth a try.

Thanks guys. I'll get after it this weekend and see if that stops the noise. I'll report back if none of these items stop the noise or if I find a different cause.

 Thanks again,

 Greg

The panhard rod is the rod located directly in front of the front diff. At both ends of the rod are rubber bushings. I lubed those bushings. I guess the noises start when the bushings get a little dry and dirty.
