First had problem while on an extended trip. I replaced all plugs and wires and still have same problem. Any recomendations before I start spending big dollars?

Exactly! It does not appear until the car warms up, but those are the speeds (50-70 MPH) that it happens.

If you mean you get a sputtering or engine cut out, it may be the VSS. I had that same symptom on my 97XD, and the VSS was the cause. You can purchase a new one at places like DiscountRovers, and the install takes about 15 minutes.

Will,

What was special about the 55-65 MPH and do you think it is related to the VSS or do you have something else in mind?

That is one possible problem but not the only one. I had sputtering around that zone and replaced the VSS with no luck. My problem was if I was cruising along at 55-65mph it would work fine. If I went down hill or if someone cut in front and I took my foot of the gas when I put it back down on the gas it would start to sputter

Woudl have to pull to side of the road and tap the gas twice to fix it.

I traced it to some sort of hose/valve pressure type thing. Something to do with the fuel injection system. I used some techron and it went away for a while but now that it is back need to get at the real root of problem.

But I think if your problem is VSS you can check by putting on the cruise control. If it is VSS the cruise will shut off I think as it will not get a proper speed reading.

The first time I encountered the problem was when the cruise control shut off on a long trip. On that particular trip the speedometer also became erratic. I thought the erratic Speedometer was causing the cruise control problems. Would a bad VSS cause the speedometer to be erratic?

Try a bottle of Chevron Techron. Comes in a black bottle for about $9.00. Make sure your tank is about empty before you add it, then fill the tank.

My 95 was doing the same thing. I replace the VSS and that didn't fix it. Did the Chevron trick and it made one heck of a difference, for about 3K miles, added another bottle and just fine again.

I forgot to add that I changed the plugs and put new wires, rotor and distributor cap. Only the Chevron Techron fixed the problem.

Change your FPR. Even if it's not the cause (although it sounds like it could be) it's always good to change them out every few years IMO.

Is your CEL on? Could be a fouled O2/lambda sensor.

Excellent advice. I forget to do this as often as I should. Every oil change is a good idea...

Redline fuel system cleaner also works really well.

I had same issue on my '97 Disco when it had 80k on it....Changed the Fuel filter and have put 10k more on with no issues since. Time to change the filter again. Every 10k is a good Idea for fuel filter.

Eric, yes the VSS can cause the speedo to go out of control, it did this on mine. The symptoms you are describing are exactly what I had with the very same 97D1.

I am 99% sure it is the VSS now that you mention the wacky speedo.

Sorry, didn't see the wacky speedo portion. That would be the VSS more than not.

New development. I now have a "Check Engine" light and it read out as a miss-fire. Does this sound like the same problem? Still VSS?

I am told there are two VSS's. One on the throttle body and one on the gear box. I am assuming that I need to look at the one on the Gear box. Does anyone have any pointers on the install? Is it easy to get to?

Can anyone tell my what the FPR is?

Eric

There is one vss and it is on the gearbox. This is your problem for the second time.

Eric,
There is a good tutorial on how to replace the vss in the tech section. Seems pretty simple. I will be doing it soon as well.
