Hi Guys,
I have a '96 SD and the rear view mirror has gone kinda 'rippled'. I can still use it, but the distortion bothers me. I've tried switching the auto dim on and off, no joy. Can I fix it or will I have to replace it? Any idea how much a new one is?
Cheers,
Paul.

sounds like you need a new one. fairly common with the auto dimming mirror. did any black goo leak out of it? if so make sure you clean it up quickly as it will eat away at whatever it comes in contact with. Donnelly makes those mirrors and they don't come cheap. sure you can buy a knockoff brand at JC Whitneys or something, but you get what you pay for.
you are looking at about $250 for a new one.

In my mirror, half is clear, and half is dim. I wrote to Magna donnelly, and sure enough, they wrote back saying I'd geta replacement in 6 to 8 weeks when they get their shipment from Ireland.

Just for the hell of it I called the dealer and asked how much for a replacement mirror (97 disco).

$334 !!!!!!

Thanks guys- has anyone fit a regular mirror? Do you have to remove all the old hardware? I'm not about to pay a couple of hundred bucks for one- might call the junk yard tho. Any other rigs have the same mirror? I'll try Magna Donnelly- wish me luck!
Cheers,
Paul.

you will have to remove the original mounting piece. this has to be done carefully by heating it up from the outside with a hairdryer. if too much pressure is applied by pulling on the mounting tab you are going to crack the windshield.
i agree. spend $20 and get a manually dimming mirror and spend the extra $200+ on tools or lots of new socks.
