Off topic... Meet the Urban Assault Vehicle... what I'm driving these days.

delifront

delirear

delidoor

Powered by a 2.5L Turbo diesel huffing 14psi... located amidships and accessed by lifting the pass seat.

delimotor

here you can see the cooling fan, brakelines, radiators (behind the louvered guards right and left), ac lines, etc.

deliunder

It's suprisingly capable although I'm forever nervous about nosing into obstacles with the unprotected stuff under the front. It has a short wheelbase, two fuel tanks, torsion bar IFS, coilsprung rear. Articulation is passable. Seats 8!

I really do miss my disco...
This thing would never pass US federalization, your legs are part of the front crash structure of the vehicle. But its a goof to drive. It feels like one of the Military Oshkoshs, you are sitting over the wheels you are turning. Took a little getting used to before I could point it with confidence off road.
I think this is what MMC was paying an homage to:

Those were pretty common when I was at Yokota back in early 90's. It is hard to tell from the plates but are you are out of Misawa? If so how is the off roading in that area?

Good eye on the "Yankee" plate... its a 93 Delica "Star Wagon". The local market is on to a rounder, milder looking iteration of the model. The Kanji are too small for you to be able to identify the "Okinawa" bit.

Here's a better shot:
deli2

Most of my off roading is limited to getting to remote dive sites , especially after it rains (100" a year). It is fun, some sticky muck and volcanic rock.
Can't wait to get the disco back.

Like a modern-day Pinzgauer.

Cool, man -- I'll keep my Disco (swore I'd never drive a van), but cool...

A JN friend of mine had one when they were new. Pretty cool. A friend who just left there for Lackland said there was a TD5 Disco somewhere on the base. Have fun while you are there. I still have my E plates from the MG on the shelf here.

If anyone really wants one state side there is one for sale here in Greensboro... Bright yellow. Can't remember the exact year or the price, but I though it was a bit much at the time.

recommendations aside, I'm sticking with my glow-plugs... somehow I don't think a set of splitfires would do the trick;-)
