I'm told some part at NAPA works fine for the trailer wiring harness for about $50 bucks with the proper care during testing and installation..

I know the LR harness is tough to get and $$$, but the dealer warns that you will cook your ECU, void your warr etc etc if you do anything but the LR harness..

I gotta do something as my trailer is running dark and would obviously rather go with something that works just as well and is less $$$...

A tired topic I'm sure, thanks for the input...

I used the NAPA harness and it worked just fine. It did NOT cook anything although I was very careful when I wired it up. Below is a cut and paste from www.Disco2.com web site. I think I paid about $70 for the part from NAPA. Good luck....Dave

The easiest way to obtain Trailer Wiring is to go to your dealer and have them install the Trailer Wiring Harness. However, it isn't too tough to do it yourself and save some serious money. Here, an owner tells us how to use NAPA parts to convert the circular connector that is standard in the DSII (remove the right rear brakelight assembly) to the basic U-Haul style 4-pin connector.

"Many folks already know this info. For those that do not...read on. I recently purchased a camper. I says to myself "self...lets tow it with the Disco". Self thought it was a good idea. So I call Landrover for the connector that goes from the Disco to the camper for tail lights, blinkers and stuff.... "$220.00US" quoteth he.... for the "special towing package which includes a connector and converter to change the European standard to an American standard". "Ack, gack, thppt!" sayeth I. When I regained consciousness I went to NAPA and for $45.00 US purchased part 755-1596, Power Taillight Converter. This basically combines the taillight and turn signal to one wire for each side of the trailer (the Land Rover has a separate tail light wire and turn signal wire for each side of the car).

The pinout for the Disco circular connector located behind the panel of the right rear light fixture is as follows:

Red with Orange stripe is taillight.
Red with Black stripe is taillight (you only need one so pick either)
Purple with Green stripe is brake light.
Green with Red stripe is left turn signal.
Green with White stripe is right turn signal.
Black is ground.

I got tired of waiting for the harness to come in as well, so I used the Walmart parts listed in the tech section. Walmart universal wiring kit model #46155. They are made by the same manufacturer as the ones sold by NAPA. I havn't had any trouble on my 03 yet. Ironically, after waiting 7 months for the LR harness; my LR parts dept. called 3 days after I installed the Walmart kit to tell me the harness was in.

just make sure you use a unit that is powered by its own fused power source.

the cheap units use the power from the brake/blinker wires to run the trailer lights putting large amp draw on these wires .

the good ones just use the brake/blinker wires as triggers, placing the large amp draw on the fused power source.

when pulling trailers with a large number of lights such as snowmobile or box trailers this is very important.

also always unplug your boat trailer before backing it into the lake.

Thom is 110% right about getting a self powered unit. BUT my dealer wanted $550.00 to install there 'own' version...given the fact they couldn't rectify an ABS fault correctly I thought I'd give 'em a miss....(as usual)....and installed my own from U-haul for $45.00 and a couple of hours of my own work. 'Dealers'...full of shit as ever...
