Just got home from visiting my rover -- techs are REALLY working hard on my rover and making progress.

Since you all got me thru the crybaby decision making nusiance section of skid plate decision - thought it was only fair that I shared pics of install.

Darned if after all that whining and trying to find protection for front diff, front pinion & tie rods, the LR Genuine Front Axel Guard Kit covers them all!

Rachel Burke www.bb4wa.com had ARB send the missing inner and outer snorkel templates via overnight delivery. They arrived today, so techs will be able to start snorkel tomorrow.

Techs are shooting for finish by end of day on Friday.

BTW, this is best part: Snap On Tool Guy was there today and I bought my very first SNAP ON tool! I bought rachet screwdriver WITH set of torx bits that will fit it (bits ARE not snap on, but tool guy said they are the best buy since entire set was $22). NOW I can get those annoying torx screws out all by myself!! I MADE SURE there is #10 torx in set!! :-)

Thanks everyone... I still need driving lessons with Bill!! :-) :-)

If you look close, you can see my snorkel on the roof rack...ONLY Dweb members know that all stickers represent crybaby days of defeat...

That is a pretty cool skid plate. Any details on how it connects and installs? What is it made of? Is it only available through the dealer?

Aren't you headed out to hole in the rock?

Thru dealer and also thru RoverConnection.com - there were a few other places with high prices, I don't even remember where they were.

Exhaust?? What do I do about that??

Sticker stays. Origin of it is VERY sentimental!! My neighbors surprised me with that, they had snuck into my garage and measured for it to be custom made back when I was OVERWHELMED by trying to learn "BOY STUFF". That sticker was one of the best things I have ever received, it turned my overwhelmedness (new word??) into humor -- which was very MUCH needed at the time.

Gosh darn it, I should have included pic of my impluse purchase while picking up switch at Radio Shack. I thought I'd glue these to the dash... whaccha think??? Pretty cool huh? Good thing they were at rock bottom clearance price, no wheels!! (I'm not really going to glue them to the dash, but if I can find a way to get the baby elephant glued onto the top of my snorkel, I will do that!! :-) :-) :-)

Jamie
Don't worry about tha low exhaust "The Hole" will adjust it for, no extra charge. The rig looks nice. Do you have a date of departure? Have fun Max

I have a dumb question after looking at the original pics I took under my rover (before changing image to smaller size for Dweb upload).

Is everything under rover supposed to be grungy and rusty looking like that??

I know I did excellent clean up job under it after trail rides, but I don't remember it looking rusty - but, at the time, I was focusing on mud and trail debris removal, not the parts themselves.

Thanks for answering another dumb question, Jamie

Jaime, there shouldn't be any rust at all. You should probably remove all the suspension and drive train components and have them powdered coated pink, and remember, there are no dumb questions, only...

luke i owned the AB kit and i like the front skid and diff guards but disliked the trans plate because it seriously effected break over.

only person i've seen in action with the south down stuff was Chris Von C. and like my AB trans plate, they were very strudy but aloo effected performance offroad because they hung low and dug in.

Jamie, you think that's grungy? I'll take and post pics of my engine compartment and underbelly later...and I'm sure there are worse out there...

Actually Jamie, I don't think it's rust at all. I suspect that it is dirt lodged in the Waxoyl undercoating. The pictures make it look worse than it really is.

Thanks,
Mike B.

it is my understanding that "genuine land rover" guards are southdown guards.

Comparing the pics that I have seen, they do not appear to be the same. Also some of the south down guards that I have seen via LR dealer are yellow. Jamie, do you know what yours is?

I don't know about south down making the genuine LR guards but I do know that for an extra 10 bucks, you can get the south down guards in yellow.

Yes, the factory guards are made by Southdown. They are expensive but worth every penny in my book.

Thanks Mike, now I have something new to learn about: Waxoyl!

Yes, factory guards are genuine land rover parts, and I can tell already that they are worth every penny spent. (still ask your dealer what price you can get them for instead of the "list" price).

LRN51115 Front Axel Guard Kit List 616.35
LRN51175 Fuel Tank Guard List 603.75
LRN51155 Rear Diff Guard Kit (the rear diff has 2 pieces for install) List 341.28

I DID NOT pay list prices. There is also a steering guard kit (LRN51135 List 616.35) but even my techs said not to install it. It was made for "stock" disco. Installing it would would take away all clearance space that I gained on install of winch bumper. In addition, the steering guard is so low that it would actually throw debris up into everything else and cause more problems.

All of the guards/skids bolt right on with perfect fit. The "book time" for install is
1 hour for axel guard, apprx the same for fuel tank guard, and 1/2 hour for the rear diff guard.

I tried to figure out what they are made of, but the documentation I have at home does not say - sorry I can't answer that question. I will try to remember to ask the techs next time I visit my rover.

Barry E from Dweb is the one who initially told me (several times) that install of LR fuel tank guard was one of the best investments he ever made on his rover.

Another reason I chose to install genuine guards/skids was CYA for any potential problems in the future. I still have almost 3 years left of factory warranty andI doubt I will ever hit the "mileage" limit for warranty). Keeping warranty intact has been one of my priorities.

In my opinion, there is a lot of expensive stuff to break under my truck, and I just feel much more comfortable and secure knowing that I have done undersides the way land rover "recommends". I don't want to ever have to hear something is not covered because I installed non LR parts. It does look like you all manage to get everything covered even if it takes fighting with dealership -- but, I don't want to have to do that.

So... For me, BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. Every part that I have installed I have made SURE that none of them affect warranty.

BTW, truck not finished yet - perhaps beginning of next week? I can't complain about that really -- b/c techs are being perfectionists while working on my rover.

Hello Jamie,

Your truck it is looking good. Can you send me the pictures, the ones in DWeb
are too small. I am also getting the skids and wanted to see how the LR looked.

Rover Connection has the Front Axle Guard Kit $525, Front Steering Guard Kit
$525, Rear Differential Guard Kit $280 and Fuel Tank Guard Kit $515.

Are those a good price???

Thanks

Pedro

Southdown plates are steel......

Axle guard is effective, but too thin - you'll be taking it off every so often to straighten bits of it.

With that being said - I still like mine in spite of all the negative crap about the axle guard.

Regarding the rust question.

I bought a can of heat resistant matt black Rustoleum - the version for grills. I use it to touch up under my rig when I get scratches and it matches the factory rust protectant almost perfectly.
