When the tach starts to flutter or fluctuate wildly without corresponding to the engine RPMs, it isn't getting enough voltage from the alternator. The tach does not display RPM mechanically. I sat in my truck for two hours waiting on a tow for ignoring the telltale symptom of a dying tach. Check the connections, but five bucks says it's your alternator going bye-bye. The last thread on this suggests new alternators instead of rebuilds - I bought one from a dismantler who guarantees them for one year. Good luck, e |

Ted, Drive your disco at night. When the tach goes dead, notice the slight dim in your lights. That is when you know. You can also pull out your handy voltmeter and read the volts coming out of your alternator while the tach is going everywhere. Lastly, put a charger on your battery. It probably needs some. As for rebuilts vs. new, I don't see how you can go wrong with new since it is new. On the other hand my family has always taken our electrical stuff (alt and starter) to a local electric shop and had them rebuild it. Usually the rebuilds last for about 80~90k before needing to be rebuilt again (and at about 1/3 the cost of new). my .02 cents Max T. |

Ted, Is your battery light on? Hope it's just the connection at the back of your Alt. A dying Alt causes heaps of probs. Apart from the weird tach mine was running like s**t when my Alt was about to pack up. Not sparking max and dumping fuel into the cats. Cooked the cats and maybe the O2 sensors. Ask me how I know! What about a tach that periodically "freezes" at about 1000 rpm - does not go below that, but will accurately show rpms above that. Everything else seems fine... |
