96 D1 145K, lost power while passing a guy towing a boat. Now it'll hardly idle, and it takes a great amount of TLC to get it to 35 mph. Thought it was the cats, but with the pipes off at the manifold, the enigine still isn't loving life, and sounds horrible. No smoke, plugs are dry, no odd mech sounds, and the oil is fine--no coolant mixed in. Any ideas?? Until two days ago I had been trouble free for 145,000 miles!!

You put your foot down on the accel and it just kep slowing down? Now it acts like it's stumbling at idle?

By any chance are you seeing rain in your area? Heavy humidity? I'd say check all the ignition components, it sounds as though something is worn and arcing in the wet.

Sounds like ignition issues. Go out tonight and look under the hood in the dark. If you see "fireworks", then you need new plug wire (you will know it when you see it). Also take your voltmeter and see if 12 volts is running through your coil. If not then that is also another problem.

Check that and see what happens!!

I've been a geek about the service interval--haven't missed one yet, so all that kind of stuff has been changed out more often than is probably necessary.

Brent you described it perfectly--only there was no rain or standing water... I'm about ready to call a flatbed.

My problem turned out to be a bad cam sensor...

it is no wonder everything else was just fine... thought you would all like to know.

Hey Brian, Did you get a check engine light a.k.a. MIL(malfunction indicator light)when these sensors went bad? Just doing a little research.

Bob - I got the amber light, but not right away. I was about 4 miles from home when it all happened, and the light didn't come on until I was nearly home... Other than non-existent power, the motor sounded fine (no pinging, or knocking, or otherwise). At about 2000 rpm it would sound like it was "loading up" then the motor would want to die until the rpm came down. That was how I was thinking I had a cat blow out. Turns out the cats are fine. Here is the real gem of the situation. Where the crank sensor sits in the fly-wheel/flex plate a tooth is missing and a sizable crack runs from that point to the sensor port and past. So I’m looking at replacing that too because it’ll never hold the sensor correctly again.

I’m still baffled how two sensors when T/U simultaneously and my fly-wheel suddenly is missing a tooth and is cracked all at once!

I guess I should be happy it let go on the road instead of the trail we were heading to! Other than the standard issue leaks putting the 145K on my Disco has been a real pleasure—and trouble free!
