Hi Folks,
my disco still isn't running right- misses like crazy on the highway, but only intermittently. I think it may be the VSS, but the check engine light hasn't come on! Does a bad VSS have a code? How much is a new sensor? Should I have one installed anyway? I'm taking it out on the interstate this morning with some kind of setup rigged into the engine by my mechanic- I have to press a button when she acts up. Of course, he ran it yesterday and it ran fine- typical. I'll let you know what happens!
Cheers,
Paul.

Sounds like a road speed sensor to me. I had to have mine replaced. About $50 or so dollars for the parts plus labor. If I were you I would do it myself.

Motor Cars Ltd(LR & Jaguar Shop) here in Houston misdiagnosed the problem. Said I needed to have a valve job at a cost of $1,800.00!!! I decided to take it to the dealer. It was the road speed sensor. I truly believe when you take your LR to the dealer you will probably pay a little more but you are paying for the package deal, i.e. trained service technicians, computers, the works. And its all guaranteed!

Good luck,

John

When did you replace your fuel filter last? It could getting be clogged.

I had a similar problem. It would run fine for hours and then the engine would slow down like it was loosing power. It felt like a total loss of spark, not a misfire and then it would speed back up. It would happen at different speeds, but mostly above 45 mph and with different levels of fuel (3/4 full and 1/4 full). The slowdown would only last a few seconds and then it would speed right back up. Maybe 3 seconds on, three seconds off. Each time the problem went away if I pulled over and refilled the gas tank. However, I do not think that it was fuel related.

According to the dealership, they look at 1.) Fuel Filter, 2.) VSS, and 3.) pull the heads to diagnose the problem. I did number 1 and 2 hoping to prevent #3.

When I pulled the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor), I found that it was caked with dirt. I replaced it and my fuel filter at the same time. No more problems, but I've only driven it a few miles since the change.

I followed the directions in the Tech section on the web to replace the VSS.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am really hoping it doesn't need a valve adjust! The fuel filter was replaced last week, so I'm hoping it is the VSS. I was quoted $120 though!
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Guys,
I got my VSS swapped out last Friday- then a friend took the rig over to Portland (OR) and it ran fine. I then took it over to the coast and back- not only ran great, but got 18.3 Mpg! The VSS was $122.50, plus $60 install.
Cheers,
Paul.

Just had similar problems with my '97 XD. I did get a check engine light and it read out as a missfire. I ordered the VSS form Rovers North to the tune of $90 something for the OEM parts. Have not yet installed it, but understand it is not the complicated. There is a good discription of how to do it on the Tech Page.

Eric,
I had mine installed by my mechanic, but wish I'd known about Rovers North! I did get a code saying random misfire, but had the code reset, and the problem persisted without the code reappearing. Hope your rover is soon running as smoothly as mine!
Cheers,
Paul.
