Its that time again... crunch time. I just wanted to see what others have on their punch lists.

Last year I wanted to do more than I was able before I left, got most of it done and then due to circumstances out of my control, was unable to attend. This year most things I want to do and nothing is super important (except for first item).

  • Replace thermostat and coolant temp sender
  • Replace steering damper
  • Remove running boards (can't believe I haven't done this yet)
  • Remove roof rails (plugs have been ordered - thanks Greg)
  • Wire up Black Magics (A freebie pair I got off of a friends ML320)
  • Shackle mounting brackets for ARB
  • Move rack from other disco

Pack up some swap-meet items:
  • D1 running boards
  • Jate rings
  • Luggage rack cross-bars
  • A few other misc. goodies

Now, who wants to hook up for a convoy? I'll be driving from the Eastern Shore of MD.

Steve,

Since this is my first time I'm not sure what to expect but I do have the following things to tend to:
-Shackle Mounting brackets on my ARB
-Rewire roofrack lights after changing them around somewhat
-Figure out how to get the transmission fill plug off on my 5-speed so I can put more fluid in. It appears to be stripped, when I attempt to use a T50 TORX it doesn't grip. T55 is to big. Somewhat of a quandry for me.

As well as the normal fluids/filters/checks that one would expect.

I'll be spending the Thurs night prior in Richmond, and then hooking up with a few people prior to driving that way, but if you're going 95 to 64 and you have a definite timeline and/or want to make a civilization pit stop then I'd be happy to meet up with you guys as well.
r-

I'm not that much of a CB to bring Schlitz... besides, I am thinking of bringing my 6 yr. old son so I think Apple Juice will be the hardest beverage in the cooler.

I'm sure some of those BOC men will have a bottle of something available for those who know how to consume in moderation ;-).

Does anyone have a set of front bumper end caps 99 D1 (trimmed or untrimmed) Maybe you installed an ARB and have them laying around collecting dust. I would like them for MAR!!!

Here's my wish list to get done:

Rear fuel tank skid
Front diff guard
HD rear axles
New R&P's

If I can get those things done, I'll consider myself VERY fortunate.

The MAR trail clearing crew has been busy prepping too. We've added a new hill climb and another log bridge in a different location with a new connecting trail. And yes it looks like there will be plenty of opportunities for mud!

Front diff guard should be finished tonight.
Picking up fuel tank plate Thurs, framework installed already.
Gears and axles shipping today.

Geez, I may finally finish a to-do list.

Here's something for the crowd to chime in on. I have been contemplating a Cobra 75 WX ST CB radio for my truck but haven't made the choice to purchase yet-
What's the consensus, do I 'need' one for MAR (somehow I doubt I'll be so far out in the sticks that I need the comms, but it can't hurt right?)
Most of this is for the rationalizing that is about to occur when it shows up and my wife signs for it, but I would like to know what people think of that model in specific, and CB's in general.

Shackle brackets on, re-wiring lights starts today. Potential for roof-rack flooring to occur.

I doubt Schlitz will make the list, perhaps PBR...

Hey Ray, How are things?

A lot of folks have the handlheld FRS radios that work just fine and others have the Cobra 75. I have both, but prefer using the CB. On the trails, these items are used a lot for general comm.

The CB is great to have when paired with a GPS on long road trips. For example; when driving I-95 in the Maryland / Delware area and it is backed up for 5 miles behind a toll both. Turn on the CB and listen to the truckers and see where they are going around via your GPS.

Ray,

You don't need a CB for MAR. I've never had one there and I was fine.

As Paul said, invest in a set of FRS or the GMRS (is that correct? Its the FRS ones but go 5 miles). You should be able to get 2 for under 50 bucks. These are actually better since it can keep your family in touch with eachother. On top of that FRS is used widely on the trail.

FWIW, I'll be using FRS/GMRS (and yes I am licensed now).

FRS ~ 2 miles
GMRS ~ 5 miles (but must be licensed to use it legally)

On my punch list, I've managed to get the running boards off. I still have to remove the mounts. I also managed to steal the rear diff guard off of my wife's disco. I'll have to be much more covert with the front one since it involves more time and effort.

I have everything in but the LR switches to do my lighting. Don't think I'm going to get to that soon. I can't find enough room to mount it under the hood.

I originally thought I would remove the bottle jack and chock but decided it was better there than bouncing around somewhere else. Ego kicked in and I KNEW I could squish it in under the air-box horn but alas, too much stuff and not enough room. I went with Greg's parts list for the splash-proof fuse and relay holders and did not realize they were so damn big. Might wait until I can peek under a hood or two at MAR to get some good ideas.

I also was able to get the thermostat and coolant temp sensor replaced. My idle problem is still prevalent. I'm going to just suck it up and call the dealership.

good to keep more than one form of communication in your truck.

Everyone,
Thanks for the input about the radios-I'll likely pick up a pair of FRS/GMRS handhelds, and if I have time maybe I'll get the CB too (I'm kind of a geek when it comes to gear so I'll probably have redundant comms given the chance)

Paul-You're truck is going to be up and running, right? BTW, I see the monitor today and there is a strong possibility of heading back to scenic Camp Lejeune next June. The wife's not to happy about leaving civilization but I'm dying to get back to the fleet so its a trade-off of sorts.

Thanks again for the inputs, I have used FRS before, but only in conjunction with military stuff-I liked Paul's example for the utility of the CB though. I wonder if they have a beacon version of FRS I can put on my daughter...

I have added another item to my list: clean or remove cargo area carpeting after a half a bottle of gear oil decided to spill, now my truck has that sickly-sweet fluid smell that won't go away!

Paul-
Its good to see someone else at work early in the morning, with established D-web priorities.

I was astounded to see the Hooters last time we were there, J-ville is certainly going big-time!
I'm more excited than the wife, but she has a lot of friends down there that make it a nice place to live, and we're both looking forward to how nice it is to have kids and such.
Have you been using Cape Fear's new Land Rover dealership in Wilmington?

Ray,

Only for warranty work. When the warranty expires and I don't have the tools to make it happen; I have another guy in Wilmington that understands the product and those who use it.....if you know what I mean :-)

However, the folks at the Wilmington joint are proactive in organizing those one-day dealer events. Ron down there has been organizing some type of club and those guys are pretty active in hitting the trails. I took Ann Marie to one and they gave us sweatshirts, lunch and the keys to a freelander (test drive). Check out this link:

Dan, Good Call on the Ashton VSG. Personally, I'll be enjoying Fuente Fuente OpusX Robustos.

For you, if you are nice; I might have a R&J #1 or even a Monte #1 which were rolled 90 miles south of Miami. :-) They have been aged three years.

If we don't want this thread shut down like last year, I recommend we do not discuss the following items:

1. Liquor
2. Drugs
3. Illegally imported products from communist countries
4. Amish women
5. Underage drunk girls
6. Half-naked men in boxer shorts loving each other

(DISCLAIMER: The above list is not to be taken seriously and was posted for "chuckle-factor" only.)

Paul, are the BOC men gathering on the hill? I've got a new email addy (steve at eventlogik.com). No women will be downloading during operation window so I'm good to go this year.

Right on Steve! I thought it was funny!!!

My list is a short one, seeing as I have no money for mods:
Rear brake pads
Fluids changed
Front air dam OFF
New floor mats for MUD
shackles for recovery
and packing...for camping and rovering!

Question:
What is the policy on bring other vehicles? I.E. my husband's car in addition to the rover? (he gets to carry the extra gear so we can play)
Also, what about bringing a friend in a Rubicon? He's an EX-RRC owner who would probably love to come....?

Looks like I'm going to be hitching rides this year...no lift or new tires for Sus....:-(

We didn't arrive until late Friday last year and got a good spot camping on the island. There is plenty of space and everything on the island is flat. No showers though and only port-a-potties available.

There is a new hill climb that is quite steep and intimidating. Also the trails in general are more rutted and dug out.

Oh, plenty of mud too.

Don't know when you're coming down, but I'll be there early Friday morning to check out all the trails while there's no traffic...
There may be some additional clean up work we can do then.

SSV - You might want to check out the Bridgestone Dueller Revo ATs ...

Enoch - Yes, I was there for 1 of the labor day weekend workdays. The trails were really overgrown. Lots of mud. Wait until you see the new bridge, its huge. Those guys did an awesome job.
