I have a '97 D1 with 101K miles. It has recently been overheating (gauge near the red) while idling for more than 15 minutes. My water pump and thermostat are relatively new (10K mi ago). So, I figure it is time to remove my radiator and have in rodded/cleaned. I am familiar with the auxillary electrical fans in front of the radiator, but to my embarrassment, only now do I realize that I might never have actually heard them operating. How do I check these aside from removing the upper radiator cover and grill and watching for them to start up?

They should come on when the A/C is on. On my 94 Discovery I can just look in the front of the grill ans see them. Charles

Charles is right, you can see them through the front grill when you turn the AC off. If your car is overheating at idle it could be your Viscous Coupling or fan clutch, those things go bad before the radiators so check that first!!!

I just wanted to add that if the a/c condensor fans(auxillary fans)don't work, they will not cause your disco to overheat. I had a burned fuse that went to the fans. Two weeks went by before I figured that out and my car never overheated during that time. And South Texas is friggin' hot!
