First off,can some one tell me the reliability of the 3.9 engine? next transmission, differential, cases etc..If we all where to score the Discovery 1994 thru 98 what would it be.. In overall satisfaction etc 1 thru 10? takers on this very broad scale....Question....One more thing is the Defender coming back to our shores I have heard yes but nothing really more except that the brit military likes what they have in place so why change it except for adding airbags to Usa spec L/R and seeing that the brit military orders most if not a good portion of the Defenders made etc.... |

As far as my 95 Disco, the engine block is perfect, no problems at all, other parts like Fuel injectors, Ignition Coil, Fan Clutch, Coolant expansion Tank, IAC have given me problems. Inside the headliner is caving in and two door lock actuators have gone bad. All in all the truck runs great, but it seems like every time I fix something, something else breaks. I don't recomend this car for someone who wants a reliable, non-maintence car. The Disco is high maintenence but it's all work it in my opinion. |

As far as long term engine reliability, the 96 up Discos have much improved 4 bolt bottom end and better oil pump. The ignition also went electronic (no distributor) in 96. The flip side is many 96's have carbon buildup issues on the exhaust valves. This causes them to stick open. There is a computer chip upgrade to fix this, but if the damage is done, the heads need to be rebuilt. The 5 speed is known to have wear problems with the input shaft and synchronizers. The automatic is bullet proof. I have a 93 RR (basically same engine as 95 Disco minus serpentine belt) and all of the engine bearings were showing visible wear at around 98K miles. There are plenty of 150K++ engines out there too. We had a '97 Disco for 2 years from new now problems except bad ignition wires. As usual the vehicle's maintenance history, climate, and use all factors in. I agree there are more less maintenance intense vehicles, so you need to enjoy getting your hands dirty. The Defender isn't coming back until '97 model year earliest. |
