Its time to replace the original muffler on our Disco (94) and I am looking for suggestions for one that is not too loud. I already have a loud MR2 and BMW 325...I dont mind 'louder than stock'...but I dont want anything real crazy.

Suggestions? Sound clips? ;-)

Exact model numbers would be great as I plan to purchase the muffler online and weld it in myself.

TIA

Go to a local muffler shop, ask for the SUV flowmaster, i am not sure if it is the 30 series or what, is a bit louder than stock, but sounds great. If you weld it yourself you will save quite a bit of $. I think the Flowmaster preferred for your vehicle is around $90 give or take. I recently replaced my muffler with a flowmaster, and had the resinator removed and it sounds louder but better. If you do leave the resinator on, it is barely noticeable above stock, but without you can tell a difference. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Your selection will be between the Flowmaster and the Magnaflow. You can use the Flowmaster Series 40 or 50. the 40 is the original Flowmaster and the 50 is the larger ones for SUV's and big truck. The 50 is quite large for the LR and would suggest the 40 series.

But I would suggest looking at the Magnaflow mufflers. Magnaflows are a flowthrough muffler that provides more of aa low level rumble as opposed to the flowmaster's channeling and flow directors that give it more of a distinct echoing sound.

Either will give you a free flowing exhaust but each has a different sound.

I've put both on and personally prefer the Magnaflow. If you want one, I can sell you either one for 65 dollars plus shipping.

I had issues with both front and rear muffelers, so i went the route of replacing everything except the y pipe, I went with a NRP stainless exaust from rovers north, lifetime gaurentee, $429.00, well it is louder at idal and up to about 2k, then it quiets up, at 60+ mph no diff from stock as far as i can hear.

Peter - Did the RN NRP exaust come with both mufflers? Does anyone know if you can just clamp the NRP to the "Y" or should it be welded? If welded, does anyone know where to have this done if I buy the NRP and take it somewhere (Midas, Meineke, etc)?

The NRP exaust attached to the stock flange at the y pipe, 1st muffler right there, stock location, then the next section fit all the way to the rear, slip fit into muffler and 3 provided ss clamps and hangers, this system did have two mufflers of sorts, they are both flo through design, And i do not feel a performance gain, just for those who will ask.
Look for yourself here
www.roversnorth.com
and yes they sell just mufflers.
Peter.

this is with the older 50 series.
i now have a 40 "Delta" series and it has less resonance than the old 50 series that it replaced on my DI.

forgot to add that the 50 series (3 chamber)is about the size of the original LR muffler, the 40 is smaller (2 chamber)

Dave, just to let you know I just had a 40 series put on my '97 Disco today and remove the Resinator. I am very happy with the sound, I didn't notice any difference in the power or anything, but you figure it it did give a 10% increase in anything, not many people can feel the difference. But it sounded much better.....

And all for only $139.92 I can't complain at all.

:-) got to love small town exhuast shops.

A place called Muffler City in Beckley WV. Great place and did a great job in my opinion.
