Lately I've been carrying surfboards on my factory roof rack bars and the bars seem to flex a lot. So far I've only put two longboards up there, I'd like to try more, just worried those bars will give too much and a thousand dollars in surfboards will go sailing away. Are the factory ones gonna hold or do I need to go buy some new cross bars and mounts for like 200 bucks? Thanks a lot.

you don't mention if you are driving a DI or a DII, but the listed limit in my DII owners book is 110 lbs. i don't know what your longboards weigh, but i would have to pile a pile of shortboards up there to match that. but then you have wind resistance to think about as well. if i had to spend $200 to save thousands...i know what i would do...

spend the $ and save the $ too!
the stock bars can take some weight, but when carring something that causes torque, it may unclip a cross bar, I had that happen and had a 2k mtn bike a floppin about, it now goes inside, Good luck!

I have a couple of Thule bars on high feet, which I use to carry those waffle mats on. When standing on the waffles the thule bars bend enough so I have to be careful not to bounce or I'll hit the roof!
I'm 240lbs..

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah I saw those on the classifieds section, you can get a new Thule set for 200 bucks though. I'm thinking I'm going to get this pair off ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3624601146&category=22692&rd= 1 they look like they'll fit right?

No they will not fit, you need the extra high reach foot, tou need nearly 10" of height to clear the roof from gutter!

Can't you just get Yakima lowriders or Thule's that just attach to the factory rails? I think they go for around $150, and save you from mounting extra feet. That's what I was considering getting anyways, and you can add locks so people don't run away with your stuff.

You can add those, but the rain gutters can displace more weight (and therefore allow you to carry more) than the stock rails up there...

I have Thule high-foot towers and crossbars and have stood on my rack without anything bending. I am 230 lbs...

Get the Thule/Yakima towers and loadbars, and remove the factory rails a la Blue's tech article. You'll be very happy and it looks great!
