Okay Guys, I went offroading with Steve and the H2 boys and guess what, in my two years of owning my DII, I actually have a problem. Yep in front of our Hummer brethren my Disco decides to have sensor issues. Man was this embarrassing but Steve was the consummate gentleman and did not rub my nose in it too badly. The ABS, TC and hill decent lights are on consistently and are amber. The breaking is just weird and to top it off the dealer says he can’t look at it until next Friday!!!! It’s my freaking breaks not a lub job, Christ!!! Yes, it’s under warranty and I don’t want to end up like Matt, humping a Volvo. Any ideas? Once again it’s a 2001 DII.
Thanks
Neil

Pull the ABS fuses until you can get it looked at, just in case. That will probably make your Check Engine light come on, but the dealer can reset that when they work on it later.

I don't know how the D2 is, but on the D1, you have to pull the under hood fuse in addition to the primary panel fuses to accomplish the disconnect.

Not that you should necessarily disconnect the ABS system, which is an integral part of the vehicle's safety package...

The ABS fuse inside is for the "Rough Road Sensor", and on OBD II vehicles pulling that fuse will cause a "Rough Road sensor low voltage" error and the check engine light to come on. Pulling that fuse is usually enough to prevent the ABS from activating when it shouldn't, but it does not hurt to pull the one under the hood, too. (Which is why I said fuses instead of fuse in my post above)

And yeah, I agree that the ABS system is an integral part of the safety package, but only when it works..... :-)

Sounds like Neil shook loose or damaged a sensor when he went offroading, and that can cause some nasty surprises if you leave the system activated, (see the Volvo thread)

Of course I am not suggesting disabling a working ABS system, I would only recommend pulling the fuses as a safety precaution when there is an ABS failure, until the system can be repaired.

On a side note, is there anyway to prevent this from happening again and if not how would I remedy this while out in the rough? I would hate for this to happen while I was out in the middle of the desert as opposed to 45 mins from LA. Thanks again guys, much apreciated.

"is there any way to prevent this from happening again?"

On a Disco2? Good luck. I've been through many hub assemblies and ABS sensors in my 1.5 years of 2001 Disco2 ownership.

In my experiences when the christmas tree triumvirate came on drivability was not altered substantially, but I did have the truck seen ASAP in all cases.

ABS sensor faults in the D2 are common, and unless drivability's affected, I would not call LR Roadside Assistance or AAA.

As I have no experience in D2 emergency handling with the "big 3" on, I cannot speak for the suggestion Axel makes for ABS "all-or-none", but it makes perfect sense.

Above all, exercise heightened caution when driving with any warning light on, however mundane said warning lights may be. It's always better to err on the side of caution.

Had the big 3 lites go on @ Black Rock, we think (with consulting of LR service) that it occurred when we slammed on the brakes and while still rolling, pulled the e-brake b4 shifting to park. All 3 functions were disabled & we were at day 1 of 3 day trip! Somehow the sensors got "confused" by the sudden stop & lit up. After we got home, the 03 was towed in by LR under warranty (as a safety issue, per service dept). The dealer reset the lights.
Be grateful you were only 45 min. from LA, we
were 2-3 hours from Sacto.
BTW we had less than 7400mi on the odometer when this happened.

cheers
