I am sure this is a common question when gas prices soar, as they are right now ... but here goes. I am averaging 12.5 MPG (premimum fuel) on my 1999 Discovery II - this is commuting approximately 30 miles (R/T) using AC - into and out of Boston - Mass pike ... in other words, mostly in-town and traffic. Is this what I can expect, or, I am doing something wrong ... or should I be checking something with the engine? This Disco has 49K - I have owned it for the last 5k. Thanks in advance!!! Love the vehicle - what a kick!

That's just about right-on. If you're lucky you'll get 15 -18 MPG on the freeway with no AC or extras on. Remember these rigs weigh 6500 lbs. and the 4.0 V8 does use more gas because of this. Don't worry - if your milage is less than 9-10 MPG there is probably a tuning problem. Be lucky you don't live in Oregon. Prices here are over $2.00/gal for reg unleaded!! LOL... :-(

I too drive in and around Boston. I get about 15 MPG for highway driving. The traffic in the city brings it down much lower. I would say that's normal MPG. If you went on say a 2 hour drive, cruising the whole way, and got 12.5 then I would say something's wrong.

And I'm new too, had my 99 Disco II for 2 months.

Hate to scare you but gas mileage gets WORSE in winter with that oxygenated fuel. I do about 14 on my lifted d1, but down to 12 with the taller Mud terrains on - and thats on a Mass pike to cambridge run
12 for a stock vehicle is a touch low
BTW I can recommend www.citysidegarage.com for service work and www.bsroa.com for the local club

I went from 13.5 down to 12.5 after putting on the ARB bumper. That's a commute of 30mi 3-4 times a week, plus family errands.

I would say that's normal gas mileage. On my 03 Disco, i'm only averaging about 11-12mpg, but that's because I spend a good deal of my time in rush hour traffic in the city streets. You've got the 4.0 litre, which I believe get's 1 mpg better than us with the 4.6, so that's right in line with what i'm getting.

Just to set the record straight, Discovery's do NOT weigh 6500 pounds as Corey stated! Depending on year and options they weigh anywhere from about 4400 pounds up to about 4800 pounds.

I think Corey may have been confusing Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) with curb weight. GVW refers to the maximum weight the vehicle can be subjected to. So the GVW is typically the curb weight added to the max payload capacity (which is about 1600 pounds for a Discovery).

Mike, on the highway it's air drag that the engine is mostly working against, so the gas mileage may be the same regardless of whether the Disco was nearly empty or loaded to the gills.
In town, with stop-and-go cycles, weight of the vehicle is pretty much governing the gas mileage.
12.5 mpg in town is a good number for a Disco.
