I check the voltage on the coil and it read 12 volts on both the pos.(+) and neg.(-) with the key turn on. My dad said I have a short somewhere, anybody know what could cause this. |

What did you use as a reference when you checked? By that I mean where did you have the black lead of the volt meter? Charles |

Thats cool. I am not sure if the negative lead is actually ground on the coil. If it was and you had 12v on it you would think it blow a fuse somewhere. My Haynes manual is kinda vague on the ignition system. You can check the coil windings by unhooking all the wires from the coil and from the (+) to the (-) you should read from 0.5 to 1.2 ohms. To check the secondary side of the coil read from the HT terminal to the (+) side of the coil and you should read 3000 to 4000 ohms. This will tell if the coil is shorted. It would be interesting to see if anyone on here knows if you could unhook the wires to the (-) terminal of the coil and then ground the terminal to see if it would crank then. Please do not try this until some others chime in on this. Charles |

After checking the Rave manual I see the (-) lead from the coil goes to the amplifier. This manual says that checking from the negative lead of the battery to the positive lead of the coil you should read no more than 1 volt maximum below battery voltage. Then checking from the negative lead of the battery to the negative lead of the coil you should read no more than 1 volt below battery voltage. So having said all this the readings you got look correct. Have you taken the coil ht lead off to see if you are getting a spark? What exact symptoms are you having? Hope some of this helps. Well I tried another coil and it read the same. I took the wire off that goes the coil to check for spark, I had my brother crank it and I saw no spark. I also tried the wire that goes on the distributor from the coil and I got spark. It seems like I have no spark. This all happen when I replace the distributor cap thats it. If you need more info. on what people said check the thread 95 D1 not running again. |
