There is an 89 RR on ebay that I really like with no reserve. It's got 164k but sounds like it has been well maintained with many new parts and a few nice mods. He/she gives good details on what has been done. If someone has a few mins could they check it out and give an opinion on what a fair price would be based on the listing. And maybe anything to watch out for with this year. I'm in St.Louis MO. so I'd be paying $800-1k for shipping in addition to purchase price. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2431555342 Thanks for any advice. -Matt

Ask the seller why they think it is a GDE: it's not. Also, I would imagine that you could find a RRC in your neck of the woods if you look around: looking for that no-rust CA car? DW |

David, your right about the GDE. I didn't pay much attention to that. I really like the older/county style when setup like that. As far as anything local, no luck. I've being looking for the past 6-7 months, mainly for a disco but with such few available for sale, I've started looking at RRs. The prices they're going for here are probably +25% more than what I see in other states. Every older RR I've looked at here was a rust bucket. And when I ask about any service records, they look at me like I'm crazy. I'm not real fond of buying a car over the net but an old girlfriend lives in Palo Alto so I could have her handle the paperwork and keep it at her house till it was convient to ship. Anyway, I'll watch the bids and thanks for the info. -Matt |

In response to the GDE, I think all the 89's were marked with GDE badging. As you can see this is an early 89 by the exposed hinges on the front doors so his possibly has the GDE badging. I also have an 89 classic with a small round badge that says Great Divide Expedition. Checking the vin numbers mine is nearly 41,000 vehicles newer than that one for sale on ebay. It may just be an advertisement for the Range Rovers as they were the first vehicle to cross the Great Divide. You know some sort of an aid for the marketing of Range Rover at a time when Range Rover didn't exactly have a lot of market share. Good luck with the bidding, I love my 89. I hope it goes well for you!! |

You'd be taking a big chance buying a RR without being able to properly look it over and test drive it before paying anything for it. It's real easy to make a vehicle look and sound better than it actually is via eBay. Photos can be very deceiving. I am speaking from experience here, having once made a deal to buy an '89 that was listed on eBay. It had less miles than the one you're looking at, and everything about it sounded great (including a clean title). It was out of state. I managed to work out a deal to purchase it outside of eBay. Luckily, I didn't have to pay a penny upon arriving and discovering what a piece of crap it was. It looked and sounded absolutely wonderful in the ad. Everything in the photos looked great. It was red. Upon arriving, the first thing I noticed was that it looked more pink than red. He had really worked overtime making it look nice in the photos. The paint looked perfect and not at all faded in his photos. That was just the tip of the iceberg. It drove like crap, and upon closer inspection, everything looked like it had been taken apart by a drunken monkey. There was also a very strong smell of coolant inside the vehicle. By the way the dash looked, I assume he tried to patch the heater core. I very seriously doubt it would have made it back home, let alone out of town. That's exactly what I told the moron before leaving him with his piece of junk. I was out several hundred dollars for travelling there to buy it. But, it could have been much worse if I had already paid something for that Rover. I would seriously consider looking harder for one in your area, at least in your state. Surely there are some nice RRC's for sale in MO. I'm sure there are plenty of happy eBay vehicle purchasers, but the fact of the matter is, you're taking a big chance (especially with an older English vehicle). You may not find one quite as cheap as some of these eBay rigs go for, but then again, you might just end up with a MUCH better vehicle. Best of luck to you! P.S. I use eBay quite often, but I'd never in a million years consider buying another vehicle listed there. |

Matt- Consider finding someone with Rover experience in Palo Alto who could check it out for you. Maybe someone on this board or another. Paypal them some tool or beer money for the effort. It does look very nice but digital pics can really fool the eye. Wish you luck! |

Have you tried searching on any sites like AutoTrader.com? Or serching through local newspaper classifieds online? There is a '93 in Webster Grove, MO for $3900. It is at a dealer though. Might not be any good, but you never know... There are also many Discoverys listed in your area. Like these: '96 SD, '96 SE, '96 SE7, etc., etc...

Yea, buying online is my least favorite option, although I can't help checking ebay everyday for updates. I thought about finding someone on here and paying them to check it out but not knowing the eventual price may skew someones opinion, although it will determine junk or not junk. Ideally, that RR is setup just like I would want, no more, no less. I guess that's way it caught my eye. Ben, your pretty good, the first 2 discos are at a lot a mile from me. I actually already looked at them. The SE has a coat hanger wrapped around the muffler, no joke, looks like it's holding a heat shield in place. The 93 is at a lot that had a 95 disco I looked at about a month ago. I do check Autotrader, it usually turns out to be a used car lot when I find something that's local to me and I haven't been too impressed with them. Thanks for all good advice from everyone. -Matt |

matt, did you check www.lrx.com when i was looking for mine, i'v seen so many that looked good in picture but not worth it. this seems to be common... someone obviously purchased it new then sold it in ok condition then it gets sold again to a third owner whom by the misconception of land rovers being strong as a "tank" they abuse it. then you'd be the 4th owner. i saw a few classics in shit condition and the person selling it telling me that "oh yeah, this car is awesome drives like a tank"... LOL sure... and also you see a lot of college kids driving the family handed down range rover. again, they get abused. the limited GDE was introduced in 1990/91. White in color and came std w/ the front HD steel bull bar. also the tail gate is marked w/ a large GDE decal on the right side. i have an 89 and someone must have placed a small round GDE badge which doesn't make it a GDE. good luck. |

I did read however some 89's did recieve the GDE badge just as a commemorative gesture towards the event which took place towards the end of 89. |

Han: a bit of GDE trivia, what is the front bumper made of? Steel? Nope, aluminum! JL and I found this out one day while fooling around with my truck. I just went outside and poked around with a magnet, doesn't stick. A look at the unpainted welds underneath sure look like TIG welds, the type normally used on aluminum. Matt: doesn't OKrovers have a for sale section? They're somewhere in OK. Nick, thanks for the photo. DW |

damn... are you serious. i wonder why they would to that. i'm sure it's strong enough, but not compared to steel. the arb bumper and your's are very alike. who's the maker of that bumper you know? |

Not sure who made it: a guess would be that LRNA had ARB make a custom version for the GDE, but I'm not sure when ARB started making bumpers versus when the GDE was being produced, 90-91. Also don't know if the gde version was customized here in the US or back at Solihull. Numerous folks have asked if I would sell the bumper, guess they are valuable: too bad there is no accomodation for a winch. DW |

My guess would be that LR fab'd the bumper out of aluminium so they wouldn't have to make any mods to the front suspension, assuming that most buyers wouldn't actually off-road the vehicle. SC |

Great Divide Expedition Winch Bumper The accessory Great Divide Expedition winch bumper for the Classic Range Rover is available through the Land Rover of North America dealer network for about $2,300. Its design is similar to the one used on the actual Great Divide Expedition, and replaces the stock bumper and spoiler. It consists of an aluminum bumper inside which a Warn 8,000 lb winch is mounted. An integral brush bar is also part of the design. The complete package is a neat, practical and lightweight unit. The limited-production Great Divide Edition Range Rover models sold in 1990/91 have an aluminum bumper which looks similar but is only about 5 inches tall -- not enough to accommodate a winch inside it. (This bumper is also available as an accessory.) Rovers North has been known to modify these bumpers by welding an addition along the bottom to create room for a winch. Unless you are an expert aluminum welder and mechanical engineer (to analyze the winching stresses in your particular modification) I wouldn't do this as a home garage job. source: http://www.rangerovers.net/rrwinch.htm#gde Han, thanks for reminding me about lrx. There is an awesome 95 disco, green w/ white top in FL. He wants 21k/obo, I emailed an offer of 12.5k. He'll probably tell me to jump in the ocean. Lastly, here is a little info I found about the tailgate badge: Many '89 Range Rovers had a small round Great Divide Medallion added to the left side of the tailgate by dealers to commemorate the Great Divide Expedition held in August of '89, these however are not Great Divide Edition Range Rovers Thanks again -Matt
