Can anyone tell me step by step how to open pto cover,by the way what is pto cover,and is it easily gotten to.
someone tell me how many of the 1995 have this problem.I have a 1995 3.9 5 speed with 41,000 miles.
I would like to change this gear with drilled one,how much
will it cost for me to buy drilled gear and bearing.Also
does a small leaking transfer box mean this problem exsists...
etc.how long will it take and what tools are needed for this job..

Gregory: I recommend that you get as many workshops manuals as you can.....
Chances are everything was switched, it was almost mandatory way back when

The pto cover is the round cover to the left of the handbrake drum on the rear of the transfer case. If you remove the bolts the cover just comes off, the outer bearing retainer just prises out. On early boxes the retainer housing is screwed to the box as well. Once you remove the cover and housing, put both boxes in nuetral and if you jiggle the gear it will slide out in your hand and you can see if it is retro fitted with the drilled gear. The holes are 10mm / 3/8" half way along the spool between the the drive gear and the pto dog teeth, there are 4 holes. The gear has a Timkin bearing on each end. I have drilled gears but they are pretty hard. If it is not a drilled gear inspect the splines in the gear and the shaft for freting. Now decide what you want to do, replace the gear or fit the oiler plate. The way I see is if LR considered the oiler plate a long term fix they wouldn't have made a new gear. Having said that plenty of people reckon the oiler plate does the job.
