Looking into buying this one. It has 117k from a second owner who had air suspension issues a couple of years ago (resolved) and just did fuel pump. Every thing else seems to be in working order. Oh yeah the cat converter sometimes rattles while idling and will need rear rotors in about 10k miles. Ive heard these models are termed money pits. But I think its a good deal at 10,000. Can anyone guide me on the road to Range Rover ? |

i would suggest buying a Discovery of a similar year and using all that pocket change left over as insurance and upgrades.

They are money pits for sure, use to have a 95 4.0se and now have a 96 4.0se. Unless you do most of the work yourself then go for it, but if you have to bring it to a dealer, which is most often the case because of all the electronic crap then you will pay dearly. Just be aware of this, and expect it, put aside some dough for repairs. EAS will give your problems no matter what they said about it being resolved and they will continue till you convert to coil springs. Make sure the AC does not have the testbook symbol in the display. Unless you really want one bad and have the time patience and money to keep it running then I would suggest as GP said. Although prices for the older 4.0se are really low and are tempting buys just be aware of maintanence cost. There is a recall for the cats and O2 sensors, and LR will replace them, call dealer and check if yours maybe covered. If not get an estimate to replace the cat because it is on its last leg and you will probably have to do the other one too, not cheap, and I don't know of anyone using aftermarket cats. Might be a good bargaining point. I think you can do better on the price and there are usually quite a few on ebay with lower miles. |

discovery? sure... if you never owned a land rover, discovery would be a good start. but maintenance cost and reliabily, don't think they are any different. initial purchase cost for range rover might be higher, but worth it. regardless, after you are done w/ the discovery you'll most likely be looking for a range rover anyways. so why waste time and money... just get the range rover and you'll be happy no matter what it costs to maintain it. |

There is a big difference in maintenance cost between a Disco and a P38 Range Rover, there is a bunch more electronic stuff to go wrong especially EAS and Climate control and parts are more expensive. I agree that the reliability is about the same since they both have the same engines and trans, but only agree that their maintenace cost is about the same if you compare a Range Rover Classic and a Disco I since they are about the same car. I have owned all three and the P38 RR is by far much more costly to run. |

Ive always wanted a P38 but for monetary reasons I bought a 93 RRC instead. Now that thats gone I began my search again for a P38 coming across Discos as well my heart is set on the P38. What would you estimate annually for repair/maintenance costs on a 96 P38 with 117k provided I drive 10 -12k miles a year ?? Thanks to all ! |

That's a tough question. As I said above, you will eventually have EAS problems, if the cost to repair it is too much, then you can convert to coils for about $1000 and be done with it, no more EAS problems, but no more cool up and down action. The other problems will be blend motors $700-$1000, heater core o-rings $400-$500, climate control ECU $500, BECM $1000. And any of these could just all of a sudden go with no warning, or be rock solid for a long time. Please note this is in addition to all the other common maintanence issues. Maybe with 117k miles, all issues have been solved. I would maybe budget $1500-$2000/year, that's my best guess and get a factory manual. Make sure you get the history of the RR or go to a LR dealer with the VIN, if they are nice they will run you the cars history. A well maintained P38 RR will run a long time, but a negelected one will be a time bomb. Good luck in your search. |
