I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. 95 Disco I. The engine makes a very audible ocillating sound while idling, and it goes away when you put a load on it (gas pedal).

It doesnt do it right when the car starts (cold), but usually when its warm.

The sound is amplified by turning the AC on, so I dont know if its just engine stress, or what.

Curious minds need to know.

Thanks,
Jared

Jared,

I've just noticed a similar problem on my 99 D2. It seems to go away however when I turn on the AC - probably masked by the compressor? It certainly does not sound smooth as it should. Mine doesn't seem to be affected by the temperature though.

I was thinking about posting a recording so others could hear and help diagnose!

Could be a fan bearing? *shot in the dark*

I just got the same sound after an hour drive this morining, popped the hood and found the Belt Tensioner bouncing alot more then it should, and checked it via the long screwdriver to the ear method. And that is the issue. I am ordering a new one this afternoon. I just hope it can find it cheaper than the dealer.

WD40 on a belt does not sound like a really good idea to me.

Joey,

My 2001 D2 Belt Tensioner Pulley has been making a racket for about a year. I called the dealership in Dallas and the service tech said they can replace it during my 37,500 mile checkup.

I asked him if the replacement pulley was made of plastic. He replied that it is made of metal and that was a recall item on certain VINs, but not mine. In my case, since I brought it to their attention, they will change it free of charge.

Jared, the sound that mine makes is kind of like "scratchy scraping bearings", like it needs to be lubed. It is also louder somedays than others.

BTW, I did the WD-40 test to see if the sound would change and it did. I only used the WD-40 to confirm the source of the sound and it was back within a day. PLEASE kids, don't try this at home.

Mine does exactly the same thing, which is why I was asking about lubing the accessories in the other topic....
