A stock Touareg going down Dictum in GWNF. Looks like they stacked enough rocks to pave it. http://members.cox.net/flipmykdx/preride.htm |

no clue. just got it from a friend, who got it from a friend. the trail itself is pretty easy until you get to that one spot, but that one spot can be a bitch. |

Um isn't there a break in period? If so I don't think taking a vehicle that new wheeling is a good idea. |

I looked at getting one but couldn't get golf clubs in the back. That was a buy criteria. Oh well. |

they may have at some point, then reopened it? I was down there a couple of weekends ago and decided to drive up to it from 33 just to look. No closure signs or gates or anything from that way. |

Ignore any recommended hogwash break in time on cars like VW, Audi and Porsche. Drive them hard from day one. |

What about the "hogwash" that the tourag is a serious offroader? I like those shots of massive articulation (lol) in that above link. |

I agree, certainly not a serious offroader. There is no low range that I can tell but it does have cdl and rear locker optional. More attractive is 7700 lb tow capacity. Nice. I like the car, just too much $$$ for me. |

The Touareg does indeed have a low range, as does the Porsche Cayenne. The low range and the CDL are standard on all vehicles. The air suspension set on high will increase ground clearance to over 10", and the optional offroad packages include locking rear diff., and electronic automatic disengaging sway bars. Very much a solid platform for building a true offroader. |

Interesting that I did not see low range on the website. Must have missed it. True offroad platform? 10" is not much and approach and departure angles are even more important (IMHO). I'll agree with you when I meet one on the trail and when I see aftermarket products like lifts, bumpers, winches, racks, etc. |

Actually I like the VW, looks good, not over the top like an american suv, and comes with some nice features for offroading. I guess I've been hanging out here to much, but I am now part of the camp that believes a offroad vehicle is limited if it has independant suspension. But I wouldn't mind it taking one out for spin. I love my wifes Audi, great car, quattro system works wonders in the snow, I actually prefer driving it in rain and snow over my discovery. The v-10 tdi that's coming makes me excited to. |

Judging by what my Audi's able to do on ice and in light snow, I'd also be optimistic about what something with the same AWD system can do, but with 10" of clearance. |
