I've got a 95' Disco automatic and recently the engine started making a lot of noise. I can start to hear it around 40mph and it just gets louder after that, at 70 it's very noticable. The noise is a high pitched whining sound that you can only hear when I'm touching the gas. The second I take my foot off the petal the noise stops completely, even though my RPMs are still way up cause of the speed. The best way to describe the sound is an annoying whine that sounds like friction between maybe a belt or bushing or something. Anyone had this problem before? I'm very broke cause of this car lately and can't afford to take it into the shop without having any idea what it is and having the shop take 4 hours just to figure it out. Thanks a lot.

Dude I had the same thing happen today for the first time ever... huh.
On the way back from Seattle. For me it was very quiet but I could still hear it (amazing what you learn to hear after driving these things).
For me it was what you said but only when stepping lightly on the gas, it seemed to stop once the pedal was stepped on more.

My whine was the belt tensioner bearing. The best way to tell it to get a screwdriver put it up to you ear and place the scerwdriver tip around the motor listening for the sound, while your buddy revs up the motor and makes fun of you because you have a screwdriver in your ear.

Pull the serpentine belt and spin your alternator and belt tensioner by hand. They both could be the cause of the noise.

Does this happen when in neutral and the car is still. If it does you may want to look at the drivetrain.

Yeah unfortunately it is a drivetrain issue. Went to the dealer and they say it's a bearing in the transfer case, said the only way to fix it is to get a new transfer case cause apparently they can't be rebuilt, quoted me $5000. I saw the tech article about changing the bearing. Anyone done that before? Is there a cheaper way to fix this? If I let it go long enough it'd trash the gears and then I'll really need a whole new one. Man this freakin' car. . .

I had my case replaced for $1,900.00, $5,000.00 is insane. You can get a new case on your own for less and put it in your self. If you can get to San Fran call Phillipe at Roverland.

Also look for the thread on "word to the wise for 95 dicso owners"

"Cant be rebuilt"....that takes some balls to make that statement.

See here: http://catalog.roversnorth.com/catalog/large.taf?id=lesloftdiscovery1

Nice t-case that has been rebuilt (no way!) for $1295.

If you get another t-case I would be interested in buying your old one from you. Lemme know...
