I just got my springs and shocks in. And I thought I had read that you don't need a spring compressor to change out the shocks, is this true?? Also are there pieces of advice that would help to make this jog go smoother??

You may get by on a stock for stock exchange without, but 2" (or greater) lift will require a compressor.

disconnect the sway bar and sit/press down on the brake (just be aware of your brake line), you may be surprised at the room you have. The rear will go a lot easier and quicker than the front, not that the front is really that tough. The instructions in the tech section are very good, I used them a few months ago for my install.

You don't need a spring compressor, just some jack stands and a bottle jack.

This may help ya a little:

You can do up to 3" springs without a spring compressor - but air tools and a good single-bolt spring compressor is very fast!

That's a great link Joe,

I installed a 2" on a '98 D1 a few weeks ago. The fronts went in fine. But I did use a spring compressor for the rears and it was very quick.

I used the 4x4wire link and instructions here and the only problem I had was the passenger side front shock tower nut. No spring compressor needed.

No need for compressor if you disconnect or remove the swaybars. You can even get 3" on there if you use a crowbar.

Joe that was a great write up, I only have one question how important is it to replace the shock tower ring? The only reason I ask is I was planning on doing it this weekend and my dealer said I have to wait till Wednesday for the rings to come in. Can you reuse the old one or no??

You can reuse the old one as long as you don't break the bolts off. My brother was tightening one of mine and the bolt broke off.

I did it no problem without a spring compressor. On the fronts, I dropped the axle as much as I could, and used a bottle jack. On the rears, I didn't need anything, just dropped the axle and the springs popped out fine. Pretty simple job, alot easier than I thought it would be. Took me about 2-3 hours to do 3 wheels. But watch out for the damn shock retaining bolt, it can be a @%$&#* to get off!

CJ, you can definitely reuse the old rings.

I used new ones simply b/c mine had 7 yrs of rustbelt weather and even with 2-3 days of Powerblaster on the nuts, a few of the bolts still snapped off. Rather than drill them out and replace with carriage bolts or something, I just used new rings. They were only a few bucks from a local dealer.

If the nuts come off yours easily, definitely reuse the rings.

Eric

The shock-retaining bolt is like that to help us build character LOL

I had the same problem, slowest part besides the first front spring I did…
