Well the mountains here in Salt Lake are coated in about 6" of snow and still falling. Looking out my work window got me so excited I had to find some other snow lovers out there and spread the good word. I'm off to go play in it right now. I do love the white stuff, maybe this is the year I quite my job and become a ski bum. I wonder what the wife would think of that idea? I'd have to sell the disco and get a 80's Subaru wagon first though.

Darn it. Although I love the *thought* of snow, it means that my warm weather camping and hiking will be over soon.

Andy, I will have to look you up. I'll be out visiting the SLC area this winter. Still have a bunch of friends out there.

The high country even over here near the front range is getting some too. Mt Evans has seen it for the past couple of days I believe. Sunday it got 5" and the road closed 2 hrs early for the year.

We had a dusting of snow at the upper elevations here at Glacier last night. Looks good. Also had lots of rain at lower elevations which is helping to control the fires. Very good.

Her you guys are talking about getting snow, while I've got sweat streaming down my face during football practice becuase it's so damn hot! My disco hasn't seen to much snow because of this hot desert climate I live in. I'll stop my complaining and enjoy the warmth while it's here.

p.s.- don't eat the yellow snow. ;)

I went and played in the snow yesterday and it made me quite happy. A nice long hike, I went up a 10,500' summit in weather and watched the weather break and returned to a canyon filled with a coating of snow above treeline and fading into fall colored folage to a lush green valley floor still emblazened with wild flowers. I love winter, even when I lived in the east, no better time to hike and camp. Now I love ski touring and just the sublime beauty of snow capped mountains in the back ground. Utah is an easy state to fall in love with if your into the outdoors. 15 min drive got me to a incredible alpine loop hike that I could take my dogs with me.

Bri- Let me know when you get into town, I seem to get "real sick" during winter, especially after big snow storms. Seems the only known cure is to head out hiking/skiing/snowshoeing. I keep a current email in my profile. Moab is fun in winter too, cooler temps, no crowds.

Mikeyb- I hope we have a better ice season this year, ice was so thin last year I only top roped, to scared to lead anything.

The cure for those colds in SLC winters is:

Cafe Trang
4835 S Highland Dr Holladay, UT 84117
(801) 278-8889

However I thought that it was just downtown, they must have moved since I lieved there.

Tell them to make a special pho (soup) for you since you have a cold. Hope you like spices! You may want to ask what meats they put in it, some people don't like all of it, but that ius part of the cure!

I'll have to try it, sounds interesting. It never stops amazing me how good the resturant selection is here. Try Xi Lai in slc 200 west and 300 south, great traditional Manderan and Chinese, also next door the Lemon Grass, tasty Tai. New to Park City this year, the Happy Summo, the best sushi I have ever eaten, way better than Ichabon in SLC. I'm getting hungry just thinking about all this.

Andy,

Man, this is waaaay too early! I had planned on riding the Crest tomorrow, but everything looks locked in. I may still give it a go and see if the slush and mud isn't too bad. As usual - give me an email if you feel like a ride. I may even be able to do lights if I have to wait for you after work.

Xao Li has gone south. I think they have new ownership. I was there a couple of weeks ago and was terribly disppointed. Not what I was used to. I gotta agree on the Happy Sumo though. They have one at Gateway as well. Quite good with excellent Sushi chefs. They really know how to use a knife.

Damn man. We really ought to hook up tomorrow. Ride and then sushi is sounding like the order of the day :-)

I agree with Andy. The Happy Sumo rocks. I have a picture on my desk at work of a white disco that's all geared out that I took a Park City resort near the skating rink. I want to move so badly to PC. The snow was great in March. I'm looking forward to it again soon!!!!

karen, too much of a good thing ruins it, you should know that. admitedly last winter was the most wintery winter of my life. it was story book with daily snow and sub-freezing temps so it didn't get too muddy. i liked it a lot. come march i was ready for some sunshine, long and warm days.

i got the daylight but it never stopped raining. this week has been the nicest all summer, naturally it will be humid with t-showers come sat and sunday.

a nice dry october with crisp nights would give me tremendous wood, but i'm not holding my breath... ;)

Marc,

Where is Ichiban?

BTW - I am really liking those sliders. Truly top notch. We will need to meet in person and do some wheeling soon.

We ought to dig up Keith, Jake, Matt, Andy, & one or two more and do Moab in mid-Oct over UEA break. I already have the time slotted and SWMBO's approval. Taking the chilluns as well :-)

Its a white 95ish (seats have no headrests) with ARB winch with 2 H4ks, 4 H4ks on a rack I've never seen, snorkel, hi-lift on spare, stickered-up, big skid plate up front w/5 holes. It was there a couple of days. Figured the owner worked there.

Curtis, -- give me a call, I'll try to catch up to you later today, I think I'm going to leave work early today and try to get in a ride. I bet the snow on the crest will be fine, sun today will probably melt it away. I want to do the classic, Crest to desolation, desolation to dog lake, dog lake to little water, little water to mill creek rd, M.C. RD to pipe line, Pipe line to rattle snake gulch, out to the end of the canyon. It only works best as a two vehicle point to point shuttle., but you get a 26 mile ride with about 20 of those miles dreamy single track downhills. Ichabon is 200 e and 300 s, I think.

A Moab trip to me sounds good, let me know.

Marc, --- I too miss Tokyo Brothers, good stuff. Ichabon has an incredible atmosphere and setting that few resturants in the world can match, but for just straight sushi quality and taste, Happy Sumo is the way to go. Besides lots of cute girls work at Happy Sumo, so you tend to forget the mall setting at the gateway. Of course I never look at them,it's what I was told ... :-) To bad about Xi Lai, haven't been there in a couple of months. The Lemon Grass Thai place next to Xi Lai is quite good, we went there last night, after all this talk of asian food I had to have some.

Jack's Desk --- could be Marc's discovery too.

Andy,

I run that route, but do it as a loop starting at the top of Millcreek. Not so much downhill though as it is about 3500 feet of climbing. However, we all know: what goes up, must come down! Can you meet me at the mouth of Millcreek at 3:30??

BTW - lost your damn number. email me at curtis@newkirks.net

"I do love the white stuff, maybe this is the year I quite my job and become a ski bum."

Hey Andy,
Come on over to Winter Park! I'll sell you my home, fleet of Volkl's, and my interest in the lodge and ski shop. While I love winter, this early cold and snow is just too, well, early. We had 5' fall in May, and a cold June, so I'm enjoying summer. But as of yesterday, winter struck with a vengence...snow, sleet and cold wind.

Living in a ski town has a lot of negatives that you'd have to live through to appreciate. Bascially, cold weather from October thru mid-June and within that period is "mud season" (most of April and May, and then mid-September to November) when nothing is happening, it's too wet to ride and not enough cover to ski, forget about golf, tennis, etc. Most restaurants and bars close during that period, so the options for entertain are slim - except for Direct TV. Property is expensive, 1/2 acre lots start at $230k, and housing costs begin at $250 per s/f. Sales tax here is 8.9% Eating out is $$$$, yesterday lunch for me and my wife was $30 with tip, for a couple of burgers. You have to pay someone to plow your drive (or buy a blade), which can run a few hundred dollars a month. A garage is a must, unless you like cleaning snow off your car. And, then your garage becomes a mud pit as the mess from your car melts onto the floor. Then, there are the minus 40 degree mornings, and whiteouts driving over Berthoud Pass. Come March, we're invaded with tourists in customized 2WD Suburbans spinning and stuck in every parking lot in town, telling our ski tech that they are a "3+" which sets the binding din off the chart - resulting in a torn ACL, or worse. Payroll expenses are through the roof, as the going seasonal wage starts at $12 per hour for ski techs. Your income is at the mercy of the airline ticket prices, weather, economy, and what kind of "deal" Vail is offering.

But, there are those days when the snow falls so hard, that you can't hear anything. The tourist hate that weather, so the lifts are empty (except for locals). Every run is fresh tracks. If it snows hard enough, the pass is closed, so no one else can get here and you've got it all to yourself - the drawback of course is that your jaw hurts from grinning on those powder runs all day!

If you're even halfway serious, you should give it a go. Life is too short not to experience a season or two in a laid-back ski town (while a few still exist).

hehehe...I think Jack just exemplified why we live in Utah:-)

Here you can be a ski bum and still live in the city since the resorts are mostly all within 20-30 minutes. Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, & Solitude less than 1/2 hour. Park City, Canyons, Deer Valley, Sundance, & those Ogden resorts all all 30-60 minutes.

Matter of fact, here you can ski half day and work the rest! Kinda like a semi-skibum:-)

I gotta say that there is good reason many people who live here are not from here:-)

Curtis,
You are exactly right! You've got the best of both worlds. SLC is a great place to live for those that like outdoor activities.

In Colorado, places like Golden and Morrison (just west of Denver) offer similar. About one hour from great skiing, 5-6 hours to Moab, less to Fruita, year 'round biking (almost).

We are trying to get a biking trip to Moab around October 9th - 15th:-)

In the words of Jimmy Buffett "...I gotta go where it's warm!"

Jack-

Wow! Can I relate. You live by the tourists and die by the tourists. Real estate is similiar here in VT, maybe higher. But we have great MTB single-track and it's free! I use to ride through the winter months just a few year's ago but my rides ended up taking as long as it took to get dressed so I gave up on it.

we've actually got another trip planned for moab after the National rally (which is this weekend)
we'll let you know more info as is comes.
and yeah little Miles will be runnin' shot gun with me as well (i'd be willin' to bet that that little guy has done more wheelin' than most on the board, hee, hee, hee). nothin' like wheelin' with the youngin'. and to think all i did with my dad as a kid was weld!? i think i got short changed?
Ichiban is about 4th and 4th, it was an old church and andys right the atmosphere is top tier.
we'll let you know about moab. you to andy!

Thanks Marc, I think your little guy might be a bit small to start welding ... so wheeling should work :-) Let me know about next weekend, I'd be able to go, plus a fresh batch of my beer is carbinating in my keg should be ready by them.

Jack --- sounds fun to me, I'll take the offer. Just don't know what the wife will say as I am here "scholarship fund" as she works on the doctorate, but once she's out, I think a ski bums life is the one for me! Moab 9th thru the 15th, you wheeling or riding? I'd be into meeting up with you guys if you end up there. Email at thoma6146@msn.com, I lost your email when my PC got that first major worm of the year, damn it. Other thing with slc is you can still mtb even around the salt lake valley in the middle of winter. Or head south a hour or two and enjoy. Don't get me started about ice climbing, mountaineering, or rock climbing. If we had no 3.2 beer this place would turn into denver before we knew it, we wouldn't want that ... :-)

Marc, Andy & Jack,

I think I can only carve out Oct 15th-19th (thurs-Sun) for Moab. My schedule is really tight right now. However, bringing the bike is a definite must. I usually just store it at Poison Spider while wheeling.

Jack - another thing about Utah: Once you MTBed northern Utah you quickly realize that Moab is just OK:-) The north is where it's at. Andy & I are going to do one cool trail this evening - hehehe!

Try Brian Head for sweet summer time riding. One trail in particular, 4300' drop in 8 incredible miles. Gooseberry Mesa, 20 ft drops while you stare at zion nation park in the distance. It's a state park dedicated to mountain biking only, I'd like to see that in a eastern state.

A word of warning and advice for those headed to Colorado. It's the time of year that people and vehicles are caught by surprise snow storms. A surprise for flatlanders, not for Coloradoans.

Florida couple rescued from 13,000-foot peak
http://www.trib.com/AP/wire_detail.php?wire_num=202566

This time of year it's usually hunters. The people are rescued, the vehicles are left until the spring thaw - about May or June. Also if you plan on backcountry excursions get a fishing license even if you don't plan on fishing. It includes a Search and Rescue fee that can save you LOTS of money if you need assistance.

Other than that have a great time!

- Mark

Man - it has been soooo nice here. We did hit 74 today and I think I may have sweated at one point. However, it was so dry I can't say for sure;)

BTW - Andy and I DID ride though a little snow on our climb to the saddle overlooking Park City:-)

"...and yeah little Miles will be runnin' shot gun with me as well (i'd be willin' to bet that that little guy has done more wheelin' than most on the board, hee, hee, hee). nothin' like wheelin' with the youngin'."

LOL - this was actually a dinnertime topic for us last week. I looked over at our little Anna (just turned 2) and said "This little girl has run most of the trails that all the wheelers in the US hold sacred in Moab."

Bennett (our alomst 5 year old) says in a panicked voice, "But Daddy! Haven't I run more trails in Moab than Anna?" He then goes off to list the trails he has run.

At this point I am busting a gut. I comfort him by telling him he has run even more than Anna. Now it is Charlies (6 mos.) turn :-)

SNOW??? You HAVE SNOW ALREADY??? What is driving in snow like?? Is it difficult to learn to drive in snow? Do you have to do anything special to your vehicles for snowy weather? Do you still off road during snowy season??

Thanks, Jamie

"SNOW??? You HAVE SNOW ALREADY???"

Matter of fact, since Andy posted the original post we even got more. It snowed in the mountains around Salt Lake.

"What is driving in snow like??"

This is highly dependent on the type of snow. Is it dry, wet, icy? The dry snow we get here is like driving in...hmmmm...muddy sand?? Wet snow tends to be like slick mud. Icy granular snow like sand.

"Is it difficult to learn to drive in snow?"

It tends to be a steep learning curve, but it gets expensive if you screw up.

"Do you have to do anything special to your vehicles for snowy weather?"

Again - this is very dependent on the snow and depth. M/T's tend to work well. Studs can be good in ice. Chains are a great help in deep snow. Disabling ABS in deep powder is also a good thing.

"Do you still off road during snowy season??"

Yes, I occasionally drive off the road and into a ditch ;-) Seriously though, I offroad, but it limits which trails you can drive in the mountains. Many roads are undrivable much of the year because of 20+ foot snow drifts. Still - in Utah there is ALWAYS a place to wheel.

some trails are actually a little easier once the snow packs the voids between the rocks.
then again most are just a joke!

curtis- nothin' better than going "rocky, rocky"
with the little guys.
matt snapped off this shot of miles at the bottom of wipe out hill (seven mile rim).
the kid just loves it!.
