I just ordered an ignition coil for my 89 Classic and I got the Lucas coil.
I look under the bonet and it's a Bosch. Bosch has more connector than
Lucas. Do I try to convert the Lucas to fit or do I return the Lucas? The
seller claims that they work the same when installed.
So if I just convert it... how do I convert it?

Thanks for the help.

can't you remove the fixins from the old coil to the new one? Or are they totally different?

that was a dumbass question indeed... LOL
plug and play just fasten the positive and negative as marked on the coil housing. 10 minutes and you'r done.

now since we'r on the subject... someone care to take the time to explain how exactly the coil works?
"ignition" "coil" "positive" "negative" ...
engine starts...
after engine starts, what's the coil doing?

thanks again.

ps donald, my old bosch coil being 14yrold(???) there's one label which is black and seems like that's where part number was marked. i'll take a closer look in day light.

Coil is increasing voltage manyfold and then provides that spark via the coil wire to the tower of the distributor which in turn provides said spark to the rotor which in turn provides it to each spark plug via plug wires at appropriate timing.

so ali, did you ever try the lucas? if you did, what were the symptoms/problems that made you reconsider going w/ bosch?

9 volt or 12 volt.?? The older classic's have a resistor wire in the loom from the coil to the loom plug at the back of the engine. This drops your voltage from 12v to 9v. I have no idea why as it makes no sense to me. Run a new wire from your ignition and use a 12 v coil.

When you are cranking the starter(and the alternator is not yet producing) it changes the nature of the electrical system. Electrical supply has a differnt number of amps and volts when the engine is being started. This affects the coil also when starting, hence the coil "resitor", to get it right electrically.

Just another reason not to fool around with coils which have been wound differently than the correct Bosch or Lucas part.

Han, what were your symptoms that prompted coil renewal? Does the coil weaken over time?

i decided to change my coil just because my engine died once for no reason and since didn't think that the coil was replaced in a long time, i thought coil had something to do with it.
now w/ the lucas coil, my EFI light came on and feels like it idles a little rough. these symptoms are not confirmed yet that the new coil is the cause. we'll see. i'll put the old bosch coil back on and see if the EFI light goes off.

LOL. han get the damn manual and test this stuff ahead of time. it's very simply described.

i think your fuel pump is dying personally, but i am also thinking MAF, and or vacuume leak.

don't make me fly out and fix it.
