The cone is an extension of the upper spring plate that allows it to drop out to the full extension of your shock. It then guides the spring back into the proper seat. They work very well, however, some people do not enjoy the noise that is associated with this re-seating. Hope that helps.

'not good for my kind of offroading..'

I think Simon was referring to himself. 'My' being the key word.

Check out the scorpion Racing, I like the way the cone tapers from top to bottom

IMHO, cones aren't always the best solution, even on the rocks. They add a tremendous amount of articulation in the rear of the truck adding greatly to the capability of your rig. The trade-off however is in the form of stability.

The rear axle becomes so flexy and compliant that the front end of the truck works less. The result is a less balanced suspension that makes the truck far more tippy and jostly when going through rock gardens.

So, they add alot to the performance of the truck, but there is a pretty high opportunity cost involved. Personally, if I were to set up another flexy LR, I'd either run a set of long travel springs (ie 20"+ extended length) with the front and rear retained or run a spring capture system like the Safari Gard droop system.

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman

Nice picture James. What kind of shock setup is that? I have the rovertym setup too, and my Rancho 9000 are stopping me. What's the contact like with the opposite tire on the spring mount? It just looks funny because my spring stops at the end of the cone like yours in the pic, but the top of my tire is about equal with the bottom of the slider.

Thanks, Matt
