Ever since doing a bit of wading last week (5.75" or rain in 2 hours does that to city streets here in east Virginia where there is no topography) the ABS light has been stuck on. If it ever decides to quit raining, I plan on removing/cleaning/testing each of the wheel sensors. Hopefully, this will preclude a trip to the for an expensive date with TestBook....

Anyway, any particular caveats or 'gotchas' prior to such an exercise?

"Cleaning" a sensor doesn't really do anything as they are sealed units. If reseating it does not work and you're sure that wheel bearings and axle endfloat are OK, then most likely it is just a bad sensor. Hard part is finding out which one!

Try gently seating all 4 sensors as deep as they'll go - they will self-gap as you drive.
