Just completed the 30k filter change on a 02 discovery. After I drained it and went back together with it I couldn't find the dipstick. Called the dealer and they informed me there is no dipstick (even though the manual says there is). I'll filled it with 3 quarts in the level plug, but I'm wondering how it should be checked. Should it be: a.) running and hot b.) running and cold c.) off and hot d.) off and cold any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. |

First, I've got a 2001 and the manual shows no dipstick for the transmission. Second, the trans on a Series 2 is suposedly "Sealed for life." Although of course the 30k service includes changeing the fluid and filter - exactly as you have done. Most importantly, my owners manual lists the automatic gearbox capacity as "10.2 US quarts." If you really only put in three you're in some trouble. |

are you sure about the 10.2 quarts? you can only put in around three before the fluid runs back of the fill plug. |

10.2 is with it empty, like after an overhaul. You need to start the vehicle, run the shifter thru all the positions, and fill the transmission until it begins to come out of the fill plug. Let the fluid run out until it begins to have a steady drip, not a stream but a drip. There is a fill temp on the pan also. The fluid needs to be at that temp and dripping out to be at the proper level. It is simple to perform it just looks a little complicated written down. |

Nathan, I have 29K on mine and I checked the transmission oil recently, it was crystal clear and bright red, so until it chanages color to brown I dont see any reason to change it. Dean |

Dean...when it's 'changed color to brown', you have already progressed to 'cooking components'!!! |

My manual says 10.2 quarts as well, but when draining an automatic, most of the fluid stays in the torque converter, hence, only draining the 3 or so quarts out of the pan. I called service (Denver East) and Darrel informed me that it should be checked cold and not running which is exactly the opposite of any other vehicle I've been around. After sleeping on it, I ended up basically doing as Oliver outlined above. Just got back to Denver last night from Kansas, and its still in one peice. I just don't get this manual thing. They said "Discovery 2's don't have a dipstick" The manual I have is a for a 2002, and mine is a 2002, yet there's no dipstick. This gets me worried.... By the way, I'm a big believer in not fixing it until its broken too, but the manual states that all service shall be performed within 1000mi of scheduled intervals to keep the warranty valid, otherwise, I probably would have ran it until 50K or so. |
