I have an 03 Disco without, of course, the cdl. I'm thinking about putting limited slips front and rear. Has anyone had experience with this set up? Any thoughts on Truetrac vs. Torsen et al?

Having seen the ETC in action stock tires and all, I was very impressed with the vehicles ability.
In your situation, I would firstly get more aggressive tires, which would require the purchase of 16 inch tires and put your preferred off road tire on, and wheel like that until you figure out whats next. Land Rover did run a D2 with ARBs for a while as a show (off) car

I have a TT up front and a rear Detroit on order. The TT works great when the ETC is working, however on my last 2 trips the ETC failed. Dual TT's is a great set up for most trails.

Robert, just be careful with Trutracs and Detroits, you might want to upgrade your axles.

I have TT's front and rear in my D1. For what I do (not too much real rock crawling, but definately some difficult trails), I really like them. There is a vast improvement in traction over opens, as well as a huge improvement in strength/durability of the diff carriers. I have to agree with Pete about the axles. The TT's aren't as hard on them as a true locker, but it definately puts you in the broken axle ballpark.

I have been impressed by the effectiveness of the ETC, but my thinking has been that TTs would be a good supplement to the ETC and would also take care of those times when the ETC fails (say by burning out a relay.)
I hadn't considered the axle question with the TTs (tho it was for that reason I was staying away from a Detroit locker -- report from a friend who snapped his axle neatly and cleanly in half.) So I guess I better start thinking of it.

consider buying an LT230 with CDL and having that installed. rather than pissing with the LSD's.

you can pick one up low miles easily under $500

How about both? :-)

Not to hijack this thread, but how would a DII with ETC and CDL engaged (by various methods available) compare with a just ETC and Truetrac's or something of that nature all the way around. I am currently looking for a DI CDL "thingy" to fit onto my '00 DII, as this would be way cheaper than LSD's. What are the pros and cons, and what won't I be able to do with the ETC and CDL that I could do with the LSD's.
Regards,
Luke

Is there any reason - other than cost - to go with a LSD vs. something like an ARB locker F&R?

ARB's are great but require more work and parts to install. With the TT or detroit, you just drop it in and forget about it, no compressors or air hoses to mess with. The TT also helps correct wandering on the highway. Without CDL, power will be transferred between axles and you will still have a lot of wheel spin.

But doesn't the ETC work between axles as well as between wheels on the same axle?

No, the CDL is between axles. Upgraded axles for TT? It's up to you and based on your terrain and driving style. I know some who have Detroits and stock axles with no issues. I have F&R TTs with stock axles, over 3 years, no issues, but then again, I don't rock crawl either since Florida does not provide for that type of terrain... mostly anyway.
The thing you MUST keep in mind that this board provides a range of information from bad-advice, to misleading opinions to stone-cold facts. You should take time and research what you read before you act. Sooner or later answers will begin to emerge that are common and then that can be regarded as the truth.

BTW. Info on CDL and my axles = stone-cold-fact. Research your info = opinion
Good luck.

"You should take time and research what you read before you act. Sooner or later answers will begin to emerge that are common and then that can be regarded as the truth."

Perhaps the most succinct words of advice I have ever seen offered to a "newbie" on D-Web.

Thank you, Bruce.

Bruce: I understand that the CDL is between the axles. What I was wondering about is the effect of ETC on the different axles. The ETC operates independently on each wheel, so I was wondering how much transfer of power from one axle to the other this results in.
