I still have problems with my 94 Disco, engine cranks over but will not start. I did a cylinder compression test, this is the following reading #1 50 psi, #3 127 psi, #5 121 psi, #7 119 psi #2,#4,#6and #8 compression reading were 180 psi. what could cause the low cylinder compression reading? I have checked the timing chain, distributor and fuel filter which checked out fine.

Try putting a drop of oil into #1 and retesting.
I'm willing to bet that that doesn't change the compression, which would tend to suggest everything from bad head gasket to valves not closing etc
I've also seen the blocks/liners fatigue, fail etc, but since that means lots of new expensive parts lets hope you don't have to go there

One low cylinder wont stop it starting. Do a leak down test and find out where the compression is going.
