i have a 1997 discovery first the tach just wanted to work when it wanted too. I tested the battery under normale conditions and underload it went up to about 13.8 volts under load of lights and a/c so i don't think that is the problem with that. Well then just the other day driving down the road my speedometer quit and odometer then later they can back on and the truck started pulsating during driving like the gas was being cut off. then later while it was doing the pulsating thing which doesn't happen all the time the check engine light came on. can some please help. |

I believe these are both very seperate problems first your tach receives it's signal from your alternator which means there is a good chance you will need to have it rebuilt, this is unfortunate because your alternator is probably charging just fine. Any generator shop can do this for relatively cheap. Another possibilty is your serpentine belt's ran incorrectly which would also affect your alternator. Second problem speedo, this seems to be a very common problem VSS sensor located between your transfer case and parking brake drum easily replaced but try cleaning it first this seems to fix the problem more often than not. somewhere to start anyway. |

what is a good thing to clean the vss sensor with so you don't harm it, and will the check engine light go out if this is the problem after you clean it or reinstall a new one. |

Use a contact cleaner found at any electric supply company. |

John, Another quick and easy thing to look into is to take your truck down to your local auto parts store ie AutoZone, Checker, etc. Most of them (I know for a fact that AutoZone does) will have a machine that they can roll out to your truck and check the output of your alternator. This should be a free check and can be done while you wait. Thanks, Nathan Hindman http://www.pangaea-expeditions.com |
