Has anyone had any experiences with "Car Sound" brand cats for their '96 Disco? They make a universal, high-flow converter that a local shop has in stock (cheap). I have also been seeing them on Ebay quite a bit. Just wondering if anyone has any input on these? Thank You..

IMHO catco would be a better option.

Thanks Phillip. Just curious, any particular reason why? Also, aside from finding someone to cut the old ones off and weld the new ones on. Is there anything else I need to pay special attention to? I have a '96 D1, how do I know if I have the OBDII or not? Is there suppose to be an OS before AND after the converter? I see the ones on the pipe after each converter, but I think that's it?

We just had this very discussion. The Car Sound catalytic converter you mentioned is a Pre OBDII universal catalytic converter. Everything from 96 and newer is OBDII and you'll need the OBDII catalytic converters. Depending on where you live, Magnaflow makes a universal OBDII compliant universal cat which is 49 state approved but only approved for trucks in Ca.

Can you use the regular universal cats on OBDII vehicles? It depends. Read the recent thread on this and you'll get virtually all the information you need.

Finally, Car Sound is manufactured by Magnaflow exhaust systems.

Thanks Tim. You know, I wasn't even aware that Car Sound was manfactured by Magnaflow. I did read the recent thread on this subject but wasn't aware we were talking about the same cats?!?! My bad.

Let see if I got this straight...I CAN install the older (OBDI) cats on my '96 D1. However, it may or may not trigger the "Check Engine" light from time to time?

Sorry for beating (the hell out of) this dead horse!!!

No problem Matt.

In answer to your question... "Legally" no you can not install the older Universal cats on you 96 Disco. However, you can install the universal OBDII universal cats on the provided you are not in CA.

If your in Ca or want the OEM cats, I can get you a remanufactured OEM cat for the 96 disco for 700 plus shipping. That's a lot cheaper than brand new. The universal OBDII cats are manufactured by Magnaflow.

I don't know if this is related, but I was at Meineke today and was discussing a new catback for my Disco 1. I was telling him how I wanted a Borla but it was too expensive. He told me he would build me a custom one for $325 including installation with 3inch piping. What else is important in my setup? I forget what kind of muffler he wanted to use, but does it matter that much? I don't know anything about exhausts/mufflers, so any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Eric

Eric
I don't know which muffler he's going to use, but the best setup I've done on a Disco has been using a Magnaflow (model 11225) in place of the muffler and removing the resonator and extending it with a chrome tip. I do all that for about 150 dollars plus tax. Everyone I've done it for has been very happy with it. Unless your pipes are bad, the disco's 2 1/4 pipe is more than enough and gives it a nice sound without being too loud.

If you go to the 3" pipe, be ready for it to be fairly loud. I would not suggest anything larger than a 2 1/2" pipe if you want some noise.

As far as mufflers go, I've tried Flowmasters and magnaflow and personally I like the magnaflow's the best. Not too loud and very clean low rumble sound. The Borla's are very good but very pricy..

Good luck.

Tim
