I have a simple question...

Why do some skid plates have holes drilled in them, while others do not. By "holes", I mean the big circular holes in the picture below.

Holes in skid plate?

Is it to vent the engine?
Is it because "it looks cool"?

Seems to me stuff would get hung up in the holes and you would end up with a mess...

Just curious as to what your thoughts were...

Bill - The holes are drainage holes for water. Also probably helps reduce weight a bit but primarily drainage holes.

They are there for two main reasons:

1) as Alan said - drainage. There will be LOTS of crap gathering on inside of the plate overwise. Holes ensure at least some of it will leave (frontal water splashes will help to clean it up a wee bit. Other kind of drainage is pointless as its angled anough for any liquid to just go away.

2) Ventilation. Air goes into your vehicle not only from the front, but also from underneath. Skid plates blocking normal airflow a bit, making it hard for things to cool, preventing cold air from being sucked in. Thats another reason for holes.

And, of course, appearance :-)

I think the holes on skid plates are for grating really big pieces of cheese while on the trail. I could be wrong!

They are also known as speed-holes. Racers punch holes into metal to reduce weight/help aerodynamics. As it makes little difference on a 6000# vehicle, you can choose whatever reasoning you want for the holes.

You could use the holes as a meat tenderizer if you run across any large game on the trail. Once tenderized, butcher it and use the holes to retain membranes for making trailside sausage. Once done, pop the steaks, previously butchered, and sausage onto the manifold and you have a nice hot meal.
If you are a lacto-vegetarian you can make salads. Place a clean container under the skid plate. Feed lettuce into the engines fan being mindful of the blades. Use the skid plate as a strainer to keep the large pieces out of your container. Then, proceed to grate your cheese, with the skid plate.
If you are a vegan, find your own use for the dang skid plate.
