My thoughts have been with whoever lives in projected path of hurricane. Those of us in Florida know how bad storms can be -- please don't take any chances. Who lives in area preparing for storm? Will you please keep us posted on how you are doing as storm approaches??

Thanks, Jamie

doing fine here in Wilmington NC. Not planning on leaving as she keeps getting downgraded. Got the essentials flashlight, batteries, canned food, bottled water, and pretty much all my other camping supplies. Not boarding up the windows, planning on riding it out at home.

Aaron, I am an hour north of you on the NC coast and we are about as prepared as can be.

Hurricane Checklist:

Full tank of Gas for the Pig
Scotch
Cigars
Charcoal
Propane
Camping Gear
Bottled Water

I am all set for Isabel to come to dinner. :-) Hopefully I will not have to use my winch to remove any trees from my house.

check this:

Fabian and Isabel happened nearly at the same dates as Dennis and Floyd in 1999

Fabian went the same way as Dennis in 1999

Isabel is nearly following the track of Floyd in 1999

FWIW, in 1999 there were two big systems following Floyd: Gert and Irene. IIRC, one of them made a landfall as a tropical storm, dumping more rain to already soaked to the gills North Carolina, another went North only sending more surf to Cape Hatteras.

All set here in E-City NC. Rover full of gas, stocked up on water, camping gear and all my Ham antenas have been removed from the roof. No trees near the house, normally my house gets pelted by other peoples stuff like trash cans, lawn chairs and such. Hopefully everyone will do OK and the flooding won't be too bad, Just bad enough to play with the rover after the storm.

I'l most likly haft to work Thursday and find myself driving home in the worst of it if the plant shuts down at all.

Robbie, Good luck on the Wedding in Sandbridge.

For those not from the outer banks, Sandbridge was created by the aftermath of a hurricane some years ago. One day, a hurricane will take it back.

Rock on,

GG

Paul,

as Floyd made landfall, it dissipated to barely be a Category 1 hurricane, with sustained winds under 100mph (94.7 max gust in Duck).

It was a bitch to drive across the state four days after Floyd - half of N.C.'s mainland was flooded.

Sitting tight in Norfolk, VA. They put the fleet to sea today (as you all probably saw on the news) and told non-essential pers like myself to stay at home tomorrow, thurs and potentially Friday. Which is nice b/c it gives me that calm before the storm to work on wiring on the monster.
In all seriousness we've got tons of water, dry goods, etc. Both vehicles have gas, I have tons of lights (even if I have to resort to using the surefire forend on the shotgun I will have light!) and we live in the second story of a three story apartment building. I have no doubt Norfolk will flood, but it should get up as high as this, unless of course Izzy picks up some strength and comes slightly northward of where she's being projected.
Our wx guys who were taking the readouts from our planes were pretty sure she'll be 'weaker' when she gets to this area-whatever that means.
My wife was in Lejeune for Floyd (I was in Bridgport, CA) so she is unfazed by this now that we're prepared.

We'll see how it goes!

Gorgeous day today here on the Chesapeake Bay. More beautiful weather expected tomorrow. Looks like Thursday will be the sit-tight day. Tomorrow we stow what's left to secure, but everything else is handled. Riding lessons are on for tomorrow and cancelled for Thursday. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, what more can you do? Best luck to everyone dealing with this storm.

Karen, ain't skeered :-)

Ray,
I spent a couple of years in Norfolk/Va Beach with 4th MEB and EWTGlant. Norfolk tosses off hurricanes as easy as an Amsterdam flower rolls off a drunk sailor. (how about that for some imagry)

Spent 10 days here south of Raleigh with out power and water after Fran. The experience brought back all the old south memories of the time before air conditioning.

A wet towel around a glass jug keeps the water cool.

Shades down during the day keeps the heat down.

The sky does have stars.

A wash cloth bath from a bucket just before bed truly does beat back the heat.

A small battery powered, non-stereo radio really does have charm.

With out television, my wife and I did have something to talk about.

You really can have fun with a board game.

A simple breeze is cause for celebration.

2 or 3 candles and an oil lamp, curtains moved by that lucky breeze can make you want to write "I had a house in Africa, at the foot of Ngong hills..."

Dan
