Is it better to get the last of an older model in this case a 99 Disco or 99 Disco Series II. I am going to look at this DI the only drawback is the high mileage (99k). Was dealer serviced till 46k. Has some rust on one of the door jambs which I thought was unusual for a 99 (its from VT). Whaddaya think ?? Thanks in advance !

Bob, it depends on what you plan on using the vehicle for. If it's primarily going to be used as family transport, the DII has more room and nicer road manners.

Off-road, the DI is easier maintained, but the DII can still be modified to compete with it off road.

Ya Bob, like Greg said, it really depends on what your application is. If you do a search in the archives, you'll more than likely find all the information you want between the pros and cons of D1s and D2s.

Basically its for commuter use not much else along with the nasty NE weather we should be having ! I did check out the 99 D1 and it has an unusually high idle in neutral what can that be ? I cant believe being a 99 that there is some rust in the rear door jambs I dont know if I am describing the placement but I have seen similar rustin on older models and figured by 99 they would have corrected the problem. All in all with 99k miles it drives well and I can probably buy it for 10500. Whaddaya think ?? Thanks again

*If* it has been well mantained, and that mantanence is documented, $10K sounds like a great deal for a '99...

A few trips to the dealer however, even for moderate problems, could run thousands.

Its been dealer serviced till 46k but I have nothing after that other than the engine had gaskets done. Still wondering though about that high idle (about 1500 rpm) in neutral and the rust ( VT car ) And there are no open recalls and have seen the recall sticker posted in the engine bay area. I hear ya about the trips to the dealer I would probably to an independent garage.

Bob, DI's are notorius for rusting in certain spots from what I hear. Though you would think this stuff would be corrected as the years ticked by, revisions didn't take place until the DII. I think you ultimately need to set a budget for your purchase and then buy the best Rover you can find. Since you are going to do mostly commuting, it would seem that you would want the most comfortable and somewhat advanced version of the car that you can find, maybe a DII or 96-99 Range Rover 4.0 would be more suitable for you. In the end though, it's your money and you will drive it, so make sure you are completely comfortable with your transaction before it takes place.
Just my $.02,
Luke

Bob, I don't know where in the NE you are but here in north NJ, there's an independent rover shop (Import Specialist) that would do a pre-purchase inspection on a rover. You mentioned the car is from VT, I'm sure there are independent rover shops in that area as well. IMHO, it is worth every penny you spend on such a service. You will get an unbiased answer and find out things that you normally wouldn't know about.

As far as D1 vs D2 goes, Greg's and Alan's post above pretty much somes it up. I personally have a 99D1 that I bought since new and now have 76K miles. It has been real good to me (knocking on wood and fingers crossed). No issues whatso-ever other than wear and tear stuff like brake pads and the like. I just came back from a 5600-mile road trip and it performed flawlessly. The last time the dealer touched it was for the 36K mile scheduled maintenance. Since then, I've done all the maintenance myself. Mainly changing oil and fluids (frequently).

I did have the rust in the door jambs start on me, but all LRs have a 6 year corrosion warranty. I don't know if the warranty is transferable but I recently had those rust fixed under warranty and the dealer gave me a nice 2003 D2 to play with for a week and a half.

My unbias opinion however is that, you really can't go wrong with any of the 2 trucks. Just as long as you do your research and you buy the truck that would suit your needs. Good luck!

I'd be concerned with the 99 D1's "high idle" in neutral. Does it happen in park? Does it idle at 1500 the whole time the engine's running or does it eventually settle down to 750?

No its only at idle in park. It doesnt come down only when shifted into a drive or reverse gear.

Compared to a D1, same engine, same transmission, same xfer case, slightly larger tires, slightly shorter wheelbase, no power windows/cruise, noisy as hell, piss-poor visibility to the side...

Great cult vehicle, I see absolutely no reason why somebody would choose one as a "commuter" that would occasionaly see off road...
