I have a Hannibal (the larger version, I think it's the 1.4m) mounted to my LR adventure rack. It's not designed to do it, but it's also simple to adapt .

Pedro,
I just bought an inexpensive REI "Camp Hut" tent at their "garage sale". It cost me all of $39. Its floor dimensions are 81" by 53" and it fits perfectly on either the D2 adventure rack, or the Garvin Wilderness rack on the D1. Both racks have waterproofed 5/8" plywood floors covered with high-quality outdoor "grass" carpeting. To level the floor on the adventure rack, I simply secure another sheet of similar plywood on top of the longer rear platform. Before setting up the tent, I slide it forward and secure it across the top of the front rack rail. The tent then sits atop this flat surface and fits 2 people very nicely.

The Camp Hut has been discontinued, but the $99 Camp Dome 2 will also work just as well. The tent floor isn't fully stretched out, but it close enough to be secure, dry and comfortable.

The entire combination of tent (which I can use anywhere) and plywood weighs only 12 lbs more and cost me a whole lot less than the Hannibal setup.

Other tents that will probably work are listed below in floor dimensions & Price.

3 Season:
REI Camp Dome 2 83"x54" $99
REI Coupe, 46"x83" $169
North Face Tadpole 51" x 87" $199

4 Season:
Bibler I-Tent 48"x82" $539 (costly, but the best fit and probably "bomb-proof enough to leave pitched on your roof at speeds under 60mph)

Good Look,
Rich

Pedro,

Devin is correct, the 1.4 Meter tent will fit nicely on the top of an Adventure rack. It sits squarely on and is attached to the outer rails of the rack. That method is the least destructive, but it also raises the CG a bit.

The other option is to cut off the rear wall of the rack and mount a 1.2 meter tent to the floor of the rack itself.

Here is a picture of the first option mounted to a DII with an Adventure rack.

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman

My tent also sits on the top rails of the adventure rack. There are some pics in my gallery.

I own a Bibler Torre and hid in it on Mt Shasta in 100 mph plus winds and the tent held up without issues. So you could leave it set up all the time. :-) I wouldn't recogment a bibler for normal camping, mountaineering yes, but its to warm for summer use.

How do roof tents sleep, does the truck rock around under you everytime you turn, do you get "sea sick"? Anyone ever haul a dog up to the tent with them? My wife likes the roof tent idea, but we both wondered what we would do with our 2 pups. Pups weight 65 and 60lbs each, so carrying them up could work, but they may not like it. I guess I need to toss them up there and see what they think.

Pedro,

I used u-bolts and I don't really have any good pics at the moment. Mounts to the upper rails, like Nathan mentioned though (in fact he sold me my tent and offered me the idea). I have a more updated gallery on disco2.com that shows the tent up there and open, but, like I mentioned, no close ups of the mounting right now. FYI, I made a bracket to clamp my access ladder to the front passenger side of the roof rack and use the front lower part of the rack as an area to remove and put on shoes before getting in and out of the tent. A "porch", if you will.

Andy, my wife and 3 year old daughter dig the tent. We have two dogs also, but at 75 and 80lbs respectively, they sleep comfortably in the back of the disco.

The tent will move a bit when you're really moving around, but it's not enough to be annoying. I haven't noticed that wind gusts are a big issue either having already weathered a few storms with it.

Andy,

I checked out roof rack tents pretty extensively before throwing out the idea b/c I did not want the weight up there while driving. I can answer a few of your questions from my research...

I was told by a wife that it DOES take some getting used to sleeping in the tent b/c disco did move quite a bit whenever her husband moved around while sleeping, she looked pretty tired too (sorry Brent! :-) )

There are many people who take their dogs up to tents. The best story I heard was about a fireman somewhere out west that has a huge dalmation, SUPPOSEDLY he puts the dog around his neck and climbs ladder with dog. If I had gone the roof rack tent route, I knew I was going to need to face the opening forward, throw something over the hood, get dogs up on the hood, THEN up into tent. (NO WAY would I have been able to get them up a ladder with tent opening facing the rear!)

One of the biggest challenges faced by roof rack tent owners was removing and stowing dirty boots, then putting them back on again.

There was a grea write up on roof rack tents in the April 2003 Land Rover World magazine.

Good Luck, Jamie

Rich,

Can you send me some pictures of your set up? I went to REI and saw one of the tents you mentioned. Spor Authority also has some similar.

Thanks

Pedro

Thank's for the input, I could see my dogs thinking that fireman carry as not so good of and idea. I probably will stay with a tent on the ground, but I still like the idea of the roof tent, I think I'll throw a piece of plywood up there, pitch a tent on it and try a dry run sleeping with my wife and 2 pups, I'll see how that works. I could put the pups in the truck, but they would get bummed to not sleep with us. Besides, now I'm so use to having a pup sleeping on my feet I can't sleep with out them there any more.

Based on another thread that is posted.
Put's you right up there with the lightning. Your at the highest point.
But, I still would like to have a roof tent myself.
