After three attempts at posting the whole article, I'm quitting. Here's the link to the story, as posted on colorado4x4.org's website.

Why can't Rover reassure all of us with something like this?

It's those semi-colons in the URL breaking the link. Just highlight the whole line, copy and paste.

P.S. It's not that interesting :-)

I know it's not that interesting -- just more evidence that Jeep is giving more of a nod to offroaders than Rover...

'Course, I'd never trade my D1 for a similar Jeep. For what I do, Cherokee's are crap and Wrangler's are too small. My girlfriend drives a Liberty and it's okay but will never see a trail...

Land Rover has the "Special Vehicles" badge. Same thing, and just as meaningful.

Oh, Ax, I know this is a meaningless bit of marketing propaganda, but here's my point: When was the last press release from Land Rover about how they were going to certify that their vehicles could be driven off-road (whatever that means)?

Or does everyone think Rover still doesn't _have_ to do that because it's obvious they have that capability?

I don't know, Peter...I was at work and bored, and I saw this, I thought to my self, "Self," (which is what I call myself :-)) "Why won't Rover do that? It'd be nice if they'd acknowledge their offroading prowess in media, rather than showing a Rangie getting the 'go-ahead' from some Arabian royalty..."

Anyway, I know it would be meaningless, but I thought it would be nice. Not sure if I can explain beyond that. :-)

Jeep(R) Creates the New Jeep Trail Rated(TM) Requirements to Communicate Legendary 4x4 Capability Thursday September 18, 11:39 am ET
* Trail Rated Measures Stringent Jeep 4x4 Capability Requirements * Jeep "Trail Rated" Badge Appears on Vehicles and in New Advertising

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Jeep(r) brand today announced Jeep Trail Rated(TM), a new way to communicate to consumers the extensive level of off-road requirements that all Jeep 4x4 vehicles must meet. The new 2004 Jeep 4x4 vehicles -- Grand Cherokee, Liberty and Wrangler
-- with Trail Rated badges start arriving in dealerships next week. "Jeep Trail Rated is an industry-leading methodology to objectively measure and predict off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles," said Jeff Bell, Vice President Jeep, DaimlerChrysler Corporation. "We created Jeep Trail Rated to communicate the legendary Jeep capability that is designed into every Jeep 4x4."

Jeep Trail Rated is supported by the Nevada Automotive Test Center (NATC), which has 45 years of off-road vehicle testing experience, including the creation of standards for the U.S. military.

The new Jeep "Trail Rated" badge indicates that every Jeep 4x4 has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories, including Traction, Ground Clearance, Maneuverability, Articulation and Water Fording.

"Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, as well as computer-simulated environments, Jeep Trail Rated provides a repeatable and consistent measurement of off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles," said Bell. "As the Jeep brand expands, Trail Rated will help us ensure that our legendary 4x4 capability remains a cornerstone of the Jeep brand."

Six new print ads and four new television spots will communicate the stringent requirements that Jeep vehicles must meet in order to earn the Jeep "Trail Rated" badge. The new spots will highlight one of the five
consumer- oriented categories that make up Jeep Trail Rated. Both print and broadcast ads break in mid-October. Consumers can also see details of Jeep Trail Rated on Jeep.com . Additionally, the Jeep brand will debut Jeep Trail Rated creative in The New Yorker magazine's charter edition of the Tablet PC.

Describing the overall direction of the ads, Bell added, "Each print ad will consistently show the performance standards with a capability graphic that highlights one of the five off-road conditions being demonstrated, along with the Trail Rated 4x4 badge. The television spots will also feature the performance categories and the Trail Rated 4x4 badge."

"The Jeep brand continues to deliver on the promise to provide rugged, versatile vehicles with authentic 4x4 capability," said Bell.

Way back when a company called Land Rover took some basically stock Range Rovers and drove the Great Divide, as well as the Darrien Gap. We had little badges to commemorate the GDE but after that merely saying Range Rover meant you knew what it was. It is sad to see Land Rover going in the current direction it is but for the most part the name Land Rover is the only trail rating I'll ever need.

I guess that was what I was trying to get at, Nicholas...there was a time not long ago that the name alone was good enough. Now we get what appears to be crap designed for mall crawling. I just think it'd be nice if LR didn't turn away from that heritage...the long and the short of it is that the name IS enough but not for long...

He has a point. I have a Wrangler and a DII, and the new Rubicons come with lockers, 4 to 1 t-cases, and the New Disco has.... wait, maybe a CDL.
Looking more like a mommy van every year. Don't get me wrong, I love them both. But D/C is still trying (sorta) to present the Jeeps as being off road vehicles first, but the Disco is looking more like a Rap video.
I still want a D90 to go with my TJ though (sigh...)

Hey go to jeep's website and look over the special section on the rubicon. Take particular notice to all the "special" attributes of the Rubicon. I could do that in my 1989 RRC SWB. It is completely stock (original shocks springs everything). Now look at this "hardcore" wrangler and tell me whats so special. That rubicon sticker does for the wrangler, what the letter R and the word racing does for the rice rockets we all see. Nothing. As I stated before Rover is all we have to see.

If you think that's the case, spend $40000 on a stock 05 Disco when they come out and wheel against an 89 RRC or a friggin Cherokee.

Then come back to DiscoWeb (probably by then some crazy version that's onboard in your truck with you, but is still free :-)) and apologize.

I think you made his point, meaning a 1989-- a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD DESIGN, not the current Disco. And for what it is worth, Rubicon is the same as type R? please, be serious for a minute. stronger 4 speed auto, factory lockers front and rear and a super tough transfer case is more than a sticker. Oh, and they make them for sale TODAY, not 1989. I love my Rover, but most here will (I think) agree the move by Ford is to pump the name for what it can while making them more like the Explorer. Jeep currently has the highest percentage in the US for off road use of their vehicles, and that is at best 15%. The vast majority of BOTH brands are mommy vans, little else in terms of there regular use.

"I could do that in my 1989 RRC SWB"
I have wheeled with tons of Jeeps AND Rovers, and it is mostly driver, much more so than vehicle, so drive a school bus for all that matters. Send me the pics when you clear #2 at Tellico and rescue the Rubicon behind you...

This is the Disco "Van" that was sold in the UK before. Rest assured they won't do it here, because the market they (LR) wants there is different than here...

What do we have to do to request a Disco van here? Can we put in a special order to a dealer? Can we e-mail corporate office about how outraged we are that we can't get something like that? What is the LRNA corporate office e-mail anyway?

You could get a Disco, and convert it to a "van" by:

- Removing rear seats
- Removing rear seatbelts
- Removing rear carpet and padding
- Installing flat plywood false floor
- Tinting your rear side windows and rear door windows
- Activating the child locks on the rear doors so they don't open
- Locking out the power window switches for the rear doors

:-)

Or move to the UK and buy one.

It's like a D90 -- as "outraged we are" that "we can't get something like that" here, we aren't going to get anything like that here. Reminds me of a Rolling Stones song, anyone want to guess which one?

:-)

Well its seems Land Rover did the same thing with their "Trail Editions". It is pretty stupid, at least they look that way. Trail edition with running boards. I don't get it.
