OK I give up. Where on earth is the mounting bracket carrying the knurled outer cable adjuster and lock nut? I spent so long under my D1 looking for it the other day my kids thought I was dead and my wife was rifling through my drawers looking for my life insurance policies.

Some advice would be great.....oh yeah, it IS an auto

Chhers

The kick down cable can be adjusted under the hood. Back it out little by little to adjust it to your liking. Check out the link. ../17/10064.html>

1 mpg would be an improvement of over 8% for me...

Thanks for your help on this matter, everyone. Couldn't believe such a simple adjustment could make such a big difference.

Does this same adjustment pertain to a 97 Automatic??

The pic from the manual looks different than what I've got under there.

Yes it does. It is a little different but you should be able get the idea from the picture and adjust the cable. just adjust the cable below the throttle cable. I believe if you use a 1/2' wrench you can losen from the inside (side you cannot see) a few turns then adjust the nut on the outside (towards you if you are hanging over the drivers side fender.

I adjusted my 97 auto this way.

Thanks Jim -

I had figured it out like you describe above. I'm just having trouble loosening that nut though. I'll give the WD40 a few hours then try it again.

I adjusted mine last night. There seems to been an improvement though it could be psychological effects of working on the truck. I'm curious to know, did I do it right? I have a 99D1. I turned the black knob so that there are fewer threads on the knob side and more on the other side. I have about 9ish threads showing on the knob side (if looking at knob from front of truck looking toward back of engine, fewer threads show on the right side. Can anyone confirm? It did have about 11 threads showing. I figured that I'd take baby steps with it.
Thanks all.

Jack,
that is actually the throttle cable and not the kick down cable. the kickdown cable is below that one. It should have a nut on both sides of the plate. 1/2" wrench I believe should do.

Ahhhhhh! Thanks James. I should have known better. Is it true that a little goes a long way when it comes to adjusting the kd cable?

Yes it is. I would start by adjusting it adjusting it a turn or so at a time or less.

I was able to adjust it to my liking.

After I adjust my KD cable to the specs posted by Blue the crimped stop on the KD cable is slack against the adjuster barrel. If I subsequently tighten the throttle cable to take up the slack to the appropriate 1mm (as described in Blue's post) then I idle WAY too high.

Mine's a 97 and as stated, my setup is a little different than that diagram. Does the same measurement (28mm) still apply?

this I do not know, sorry

the image is from the "through MY 96" manual, so 1997 may be totally different.
