99 Disco II. When I turn left (only left) I hear this funny noise, it sounds like my disco is imitating chewie from Star Wars, you know when he growls or whatever it is that he does... What could this be (other that a really big star wars action figure)?

James:

Does it do it all the time or only in the morning when you first take off for the day?

Sounds like your steering damper might be gone (as in collapsed). Does your truck self-center after the turn? Does it shimmy quite a bit when you hit bumps in the road at higher speeds?

My new '03 Disco makes a similar noise but only when I hit a speed bump and turning left or right. I would describe it more of a deep boing coming from the steering wheel assembly.

Sounds like the typical steering fart. Chewy could sound like a fart it just depends...
My 99D1 does this usually when pulling in or out of a parking space. My fluid is fine. Probably need a new steering box or Beano.

It happens all thru the day. The power steering res. is full. Seems to ride fine other than that noise. I am just concerned that it is building up for a big repair bill...

maybe you need to purge the Power Steering system.

if my 89 range rover doesn't make noise your brand new truck shouldn't

James, try this. Turn off the engine and turn the wheel. Still hear it? Next, let someone turn the wheel for you and put your hands on steering components, tie-rods/drag-link/damper etc, and see if you can isolate the vibration.
Once you isolate the source, then the choices for repair can begin.
Right now everyone is taking pot shots and you should not confuse that with replacing parts, unless you have lots of time and money.
Good luck and let us all know what you have found. Then the ideas will lead to focused solution.

Is it not just the normal Disco groan? The rubber gromit through the bulkhead needing greased?

Poke a finger of grease up into the gromit and noise should vanish.

I think Don is right. I have to do this every 6 weeks or so on my 95. Sounds just like Chewy.

I will try the grease as well as see if I can locate any vibrations. I am all for cheap fixes! The "rubber gromit through the bulkhead", can someone describe where I should be looking. I'll likley know it when I see it, but I need to know where to start looking. Thanks again.

James, I had noise only in one direction (sorry I dont remember which way) and turned out to be that plactic thing that covers the bottom of the engine . It came loose on one side and hit the steering arms as they moved. I had my wife turn back and forth as I looked under.. turned a couple of screws and it was done. Good Luck

The gromit greasing is a good idea regardless. Typically when this is the issue you can feel it in your steering wheel, right guys? I know when mine does this, after some deep water wheeling, I can feel the steering shutter and groan.
Still waiting for your diagnosis.

James,
Just out of curiosity, have you put on larger tires lately? And does it make the sound when you turn left to full lock or any turn amount?
I just put larger AT's on my '96 and had the same thing at full lock in only 1 direction. Turned out to be the steering limiter bolt (not sure what the technical name is). Its located near the ball that the wheel is on. Three turns of the wrench to increase the effective length of the the part of the bolt that is exposed, and voila. Problem solved. The bolt serves as a simple bump stop for the wheel. Just a thought.
